Topic Dog Boards / General / Husky Scam...anyone heard of this?

Out walking with the dogs the other day and got chatting with a chap walking with his dog.  He was asking about my 3 Staffs.  I explained the 2 pups were from my bitch, and he asked how much profit I made from the litter...none at all was my response!  He said he wasn't surprised...he knows how expensive it is to breed (amongst other issues) and then went on to describe an alternative to breeding that it "guaranteed" to make you a profit that an acquaintance of his is well versed in apparently...

It goes as follows...he bought 3 husky pups from France for £600 (total), imported them under the passport scheme and sold them on at a later date for £1200 each...:-( :-(  More imports planned soon...

Apparently this is now becoming a popular thing to do...

Never come across this before and must admit has saddened me...but somehow doesn't surprise me...anyone else heard of this?

No but it doesn't surprise me. If dogs are available cheaper elsewhere there will always be some bright spark to try to make a few pounds. To these people it makes a dog no more than a comodity to be sold on from place to place. Basically these people are dealers, which rather puts into perspective the thing about the Manns. What is acceptable here and now, may not be in the future, equally what we see as being unacceptable now is not in other countries or in times gone by here.
I am assuming that these people are not registering the dogs at the KC as the KC would not welcome dealers using their registration services like this surely?

Hhhmmmm.  He must be selling them to people who really haven`t done their homework.  You wouldn`t pay any more than £500-600 from any reputable husky breeder.  These are probably the pups that end up in Husky welfare as they are not the easiest of breeds to keep, especially to those who jump in without doing their research first.

Met a husky pup who had been rehomed through the breed rescue.  Seems the owner couldn't cope with it at 8 weeks old and had taken it to the Vet to before Xmas to PTS, but they contacted the Rescue.

This is much the same thing as the people who buy collie pups from farmers for £10 each and sell them for £120.  Not quite such large amounts of money as your guy but twice the percentage profit and happens big time round here.

Have to agree with Liz being owned by a husky, i researched 5 years before i got my puppy and she is now 8 months and im still learning. Its these people who let the breed down. I just hope these pups are going to a nice owner that knows and has researched the breed well, and not to people who breed for the money, as they will expect to sell the puppies at the same price as what they bought the dog for.

Under the PETS scheme to enable a puppy to enter the UK. The puppy  has to be 3 months old before it can have its rabies jab and blood tested by a Vet has to be clear after 6 months, meaning that under this scheme the puppy would be 9 months old (at the earliest that is if all test results were satisfactory before it could enter the UK) During this time the person you mentioned would have to pay for the puppies keep in France together with all the other financial requirements relating to the PETS scheme.  This does not appear to me to be 'profitable' scam sounds quite an expensive way to bring puppies into the UK- unless of course the person smuggles the pups in and does not go through the scheme but he is taking a chance and risking the welfare of not only those puppies but all other dogs, at risk of rabies and all other diseases infrequently found here. If so I sincerely hope next time he gets caught.

Hi Pat.  It would actually take longer, as the blood test has to be taken at least 30 days after the rabies jab, and the six month wait starts from there.  So pup would be 10 months.

There are several people offering a boarding service for Pers on the sontinent, sor of like Quarantine with socialisation.

I know of a couple of Dobes who were boarded this way, as they originated in Russia, and spent their wait in Holland.  It actually cost the New owners more than Quarantine, plus they did several trips over to visit the dog.

I guess this guy must be making some kind of healthy profit so heavens knows how he's getting round all the various import regulations but he's clearly made money this time round and is planning on doing it again.

Does make you wonder doesn't it? :-(
