Topic Dog Boards / Showing / GCDS at Crufts
- By peanuts [gb] Date 21.01.04 21:35 UTC
Just wondered how many people out the have entered that class at crufts?

When i first saw it advertised i thought i was a bit of fun , you know sit down walk to heel etc ( silly me ) Lots of people i know think that it is like the Bronze test as that is what it sounds like.
I know a few people that have entered there main class and that aswell.
Can you imagine winning your class i.e limit and then getting beaten in the GCDS so they will be out of the line up ( ouch ).

Very unlikly tho if you do win limit or any other class that you will get beaten, unless it is the dog that ends up getting best dog/bitch etc!!!!

Of course you can be beaten, the GCDS is judged as a breed class on conformation so a dog from this class could go on to win BIS.

I think that Ice Quenn wasnt questioning the basics of the beaten dog rule, just that if you won Limit you would be unlikely to be beaten in the GCDS class, dont think too many open dogs will compete!

Worse if you win your class and the GCDS and then your dog decides he has had enough of Crufts and refuses to continue showing in the challenge, I should be so lucky. But just in case I have only entered the one class.

gscd is for first time pet owners and stuff not people doing compertition level
- By peanuts [gb] Date 31.01.04 09:43 UTC
Not quite sure what you mean it's for pet owners?

- By Dragonusthei [gb] Date 31.01.04 10:38 UTC
well a pet dog is a pet. decent compertition dogs arnt there working dogs, thats how i concider mine. lets face it why would any one have a bc or ws or anything but compertition there too much work for a pet thats why the recue centers are full of them
- By archer [gb] Date 31.01.04 10:42 UTC
you have to qualify for this class in exactly the same way as any other on top of which have to have passed the GCDS bronze or above.
I think you should find out what the facts are first before posting on a public board

yea exactly the gcds only requires you to pass an award that any pet dog can, compertition your against people, gcds you dont even have to pass the trainers give them out like animal right leaflets every 1 can get them there easy to get. there ment to be easy its just for pet dogs that arnt good enough to go in obedience trial
- By archer [gb] Date 31.01.04 11:21 UTC
No the dog also has to qualify for crufts by winning the required places at Championship shows to enter this class. You cannot just take a pet dog with a bronze gcds to crufts!!!!!
THIS IS A SHOW CLASS...judged on confirmation...not obedience!!!
- By Dragonusthei [gb] Date 31.01.04 11:41 UTC
For crufs obedience of course you cant

but for the gcds whitch we are talking about you can take anything in gcdc thing at crufs just look at them in the ring if you dont belive me they arnt good

I thought the KCGC Show class was new this year unlike the KCGC Displays which have been going on for several years?

It is Anne and I think thats where the problem lies the poster isnt talking about the new classes but about the displays which are  to encourage the general public to do some training with their dogs. Not everyone wants or has the capability to do compertition obedience but it doesnt mean they shouldnt be encouraged to train their dogs JMHO. Couldn't agree more Gillian :)

The Kennel Club have stated that the dogs MUST have already qualified for Crufts in the usual way for the show ring AND qualified at least at Bronze level to be entered in this class. You CANNOT enter in this class unless your dog has qualified in the showring at the proper shows. This means that a working collie cannot enter THIS class as it will not have been eligible to show.
- By Dragonusthei [gb] Date 31.01.04 15:19 UTC
LindyLou bcs arnt eligable?????????? if thats true that its oviousely just for crap people who cant take it vs  good dogs and entering a non collie class any where is just admiting your not good enough
- By archer [gb] Date 31.01.04 15:31 UTC
Bc's can enter in the bc gcds BC class as long as they have qualified for crufts in the usual way...whats so hard to understand!!!It is not a mixed class .There are gcds classes for each individual breed...so bcs will have puppy, jnr, post grad etc and a gcds class...all judged on confirmation!!!Ther will be a gcds class for staffies,GSD,elkies,BSD,etc, etc

Slow down BCs are eligible if they have qualified in the usual breed showing way Working collies i.e. un registered on the breed register aren't. Gillian
- By satincollie (Moderator) Date 31.01.04 15:38 UTC
We aren't talking about obedience classes we are talking about breed showing i.e confirmation classes. Gillian
- By archer [gb] Date 31.01.04 14:37 UTC
Dragonusthei
the original poster and evreyone  else on this thread is refering to the NEW class that is being introduced for the FIRST time this year and so hence no I have not seen the dogs in this class before. As I said all dogs in this class will have been placed in the qualifying places at champ shows as required!!..it is a confirmation class with the winning dog being eligible to compete for the CC.

Dragonusthei, you do seem to have some strange ideas about show dogs, most of them are pets, most of them do obedience at some level during their lives and at Crufts all dogs have to have qualified, what ever classes they are entering, conformation, obedience, agility, fly ball or GCDS.

Conformation Classes for those of the breed who have qualified at a championship show.
GCDS Classes are for those qualified as above who also hold at least a Bronze at GCDS
Obedience for those qualified at obedience shows, their classes are for any breed or cross and are only separated by sex.
Fly ball and agility are I think all done in teams and therefore have qualified as a team in appropriate competition.

Think the idea was to prove to people like yourself, that show dogs are just like other dogs who do other things apart from show in the show ring, they happen to be of good conformation and their owners enjoy showing them, otherwise they are pet dogs.
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 31.01.04 17:47 UTC
Apart form the events mentioned above there are classes for Field Trial, Working trial, Racing or Coursing and Working Gundog all within the conformation classes along with the new GCDS. Apart from the GCDS the other classes are only for the breeds that have trials etc. throughout the year at which to qualify. They do of course have to qualify for the conformation as well.

>>if thats true that its oviousely just for crap people who cant take it<<

Not sure where that leaves me, I have a Border Collie that has qualified for Crufts in breed, does competitive obedience and has passed the KCGC bronze.  I am very proud of all three.

>>well a pet dog is a pet. decent compertition dogs arnt there working dogs<<

Wrong again, mine are also pets

Dragonusthei, if you can't post in a civil manner, than at least get your facts right.

And very proud of your BC you should be!! Sandra  :)

Sadly my Boxer bitch didn't qualify through for this years Crufts...we were oh so close...
4th in Post Grad bitch after along weigh up between her and the eventual 3rd place winner...
She has got KCGC's Bronze and Silver awards :) and is currently just about to start training for her Gold.
I hope to start agility training this year with her.
She's been FCI graded excellent at last year's IKC St Pats show....and she's also very much part of the family
first and anything else is a bonus.
I too am very proud of her achievements and if we'd have qualified for this years Crufts we would have been
proud to enter the breed KCGC's class :)  (Even though there are some that have poo-pooed the class)
She's also home-bred which makes her achievements very special to me her proud human mum :D
- By sandrah Date 31.01.04 19:27 UTC
Oh that is so very close, bet the others had already qualified too. :(  Never mind, go for it this year.  I am sure you take the best dog home whatever.
Congratulations on your silver KCGC and good luck for the gold.
