Toby has started dragging him bottom along the carpet, i always thought dogs did this when they have worms but Toby is wormed regular and was wormed before christmas, i had a look at his bottom and it looks a bit red, any ideas, do i need to take him to the vets,

He may have anal gland trouble, so take him to the vet to be checked. When you worm him do you use wormers from the vet or the pet shop? Those from pet shops are a waste of money as they are not effective.

Hi Heidi was Toby doing this before the liver cakes & biscuits
Now don't take this the wrong way but I hope you get to the bottom of it soon

Hello Heidleberg,

It does sound like anal glands.  My cavs especially drag their bottom and sure enough the glands are full.  My cavs have their glands emptied approx every two months.  Martha my vet was prepared to teach me how to do it.  Dont think so.  Dont like the smell.

I would get your pooch checked out and hopefully it is nothing more than that.

Hi all,
just been to vets to make appointment saw nurse and she said it sounded like anal glands sometimes it clears  without help, she said see how it goes but if it becomes inflamed bring him in,
yes jean this is recent, what would the liver cakes have to do with it?

Don't know but I knew you hadn't mentioned the problem before I just wondered if there was any connection. Probably not but bear it in mind when you go to the vet. I know when anything is wrong with my dogs like tummy upsets etc I ask myself what have they had Hope Toby is better soon

it  sounds like anal glands need emptying you could ask one of the vet nurses to do it or you could go to the vet and if it is that they can show you how to do it yourself in the future

What exactly is the technique for emptying anal glands please?
- By yorkiefamily [gb] Date 17.01.04 20:13 UTC
i bought a book called  a dog owners guide to grooming your dog by suezanne  ruiz  it has pictures and shows you the right place to find the glands  so i copied this out of the book
"holding the dogs tail up with your left hand squeeze either side of the anus with finger and thumb of the right hand pushing in towards the dogs body,be gentle but firm.it is best to use a pad  before expressing the anal glands"
in the book ther are pictures that show the right place she reccomends doing them every 8 weeks it does take a bit of practice i hope that will help

It's better to get the vet to demonstrate as if you do it wrong you can cause more problems.

hi wendy,
i would never attempt anything like that without the vet showing me and then i would only do it if i felt confident about it, but the problem seems to be sorted without any help from the vet,
