Is anyone still up? Cracker has been sick twice in the past hour and he brought up alot. He also has very soft poo. He has been to the vets today to be wormed with Panacur Paste (hes 14 weeks old and an Italian Greyhound pup). He did get hold of some Cat poo on the way home and he may have eaten some. How sick would this make him? Should I ring the vets or am I worrying too much? any pointers for tonight? When should I take him...if he is sick again? Sorry for all the worry, its the first time he's been ill. Thanks loads, Lisa

Lisa,
I'm still here but not an expert. My dog eats cat poo all the time and doesn't have any ill effects. It's probably a reaction to what he was given at the vets. Don't worry unless he gets worse then hopefully an expert will be here to advise.

Hi Lise
I wouldn't worry too much if he seems fairly bright, dont give him any food until late morning - to allow his intestines to rest - then give him something light and easy to digest ie scrambled egg, boiled chicken, rice.( small amounts) if he keeps that down then gradually introduce his normal diet at the next meal. Importantly he must have plenty of water to drink (make sure he does drink it, dont just offer it) during the starvation period. Of course if his symptoms worsen during this time then please talk to your vet. Hope he gets well soon.

It may just be co-incidence, but Panacur always gave my Golden sickness and diarrhoea. See how he is over the next hour or so, and if you're concerned, and he still seems poorly, then I would say contact your vet, better to be safe than sorry,
Hope all goes well.

Thanks for the quick replies, its just nice to know theres someone there to ask! I dont post much on the board, but im an addicted reader of all the messages, its just a shame my first proper query is when im in a bit of a panic! Ill keep you posted. Should I be encouraging him to drink water? I presume I should be? Thanks so much, Lisa

Hi Lise its a good idea to encourage your puppy to drink a reasonable amount, if he has had soft motions and two bouts of vomiting he will have to replace the fluids lost during that time, dehydration will cause him to become lethargic therefore less inclined to want to eat and drink which leads you into a vicious circle. Dont be alarmed though, trust your common sense, I'm sure every puppy owner goes through this at least once.

Not right away Lise. Give him a little time to settle. If he`s OK he`ll not need it too much right away, if he gets really poorly you`ll know & he`ll be at the vets. Do not let him take too much at a time :)

OK 2 conflicting posts of advice here. Can only say what I`d done after having very poorly pups. :)

You still here Lise, has he got a temp?

He had his temp taken at the vets earlier and unfortunately I do not have a thermometer... :-( (I know what im doing tommorow...) He is sitting on my knee by the fire and hes been ok for a while now, I did the honey dissolved in water and he enjoyed it, but I just let him have a small ammount for now, so thanks for that advice. Lisa
Hi Lise, try not to worry for now whats caused it, you can deal with that later. He`s only a little pup so the important thing to do is make sure he doesn`t get dehydrated which vomiting &/or diaorrhea can cause.
Keep him quiet, if you have any honey in the house add a tablespoonful to some cool water & offer him small drinks every so often but don`t give any food. Do you know how to take his temp? if you do take it & see if it`s normal. If the vomiting gets worse or he starts with diaorrhea as well then call the vet. If he doesn`t then let him sleep & call your vet first thing in morning. Lets know he gets on :)

Forgot to say if he does have a temp ring you vet now.

(over use of advice and support!) But you guys are worth it!
Thats good then Lise :)
Just go with little drinks often, if its going to be serious & you let him drink a lot he`ll not be able to keep it down, just throw it back up. If he stays stable during the night still ring the vet in the morning but any worse during the night & I`d wake the duty vet :) Good luck & let us now how he gets on in the morning & don`t panic ;)

Hi everyone, thanks for the help last night. Cracker is alot better this morning, nice solid poo and he has had a small breakfast. The vet has advised to try worming him again on Monday, that way we should be able to determine whether or not the wormer caused his sickness. Im a bit wary about putting him through that again though. Thanks, Lisa.
Glad to hear that Cracker is feeling better this morning Lise :)
At least if he has a similar reaction on Monday, you'll know to avoid that particular wormer in future.

To be honest, this kind of problem is common with worming pups, as (and I know this sounds daft) it's kindof proof its working. It's common in pups with heavy worm loads. I dont think a different wormer wouldve had a different effect - it's just the symptoms look worse when its a pup. Ruby gets the squits for a day after worming, being sick is generally an indicator of a heavy worm load. Might the vet want you to worm him again to make sure theyre all gone?
On the cat poo side of things - Ruby ate some out of the litter tray (didnt get there quick enough!), and was sick all afternoon after it. Some dogs can handle such a delicacy, but others get really pukey off it! *lol*
Hi Kathy, *being sick is generally an indicator of a heavy worm load. As we hear of a fair few number of dogs/pups being sick does that mean most have a heavy worm load then despite being wormed regularly?
*Might the vet want you to worm him again to make sure* Why not have a fecal test done first, it might not even be necessary to be giving such harsh chemicals.
Chrisitne Spain.
Glad he`s better :)
I`d be very wary too, I wouldn`t worm him again so soon after that & I would also use a natural wormer ;)
