Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / What is a pinch collar.
- By DebbieN [gb] Date 28.01.04 19:37 UTC
Hi all
I was talking to one of the mums at the school today and she had her 10month old spanial with her. The dog pulled away and then whined and looked at her like it had just been told off. I asked her what was wrong with him and she told me that he had a pinch collar to stop him pulling. It sounded so painfull and he looked very sorry for himself.
What is one? and are they as painfull as they look?

Not my favourite piece of equipment!

A pinch collar is similar to a choke chain (can't remember exactly) but the dog will react out of fear rather than obedience and who wants that result!
They can cause damage if not used correctly.

My Nanner was advised to use one on her dog a few years ago. By a dog behaviourist!!!!!!!!!
Geeeeeeesssssss, would never even dream of using one on either of mine :(

They are barbaric and shouldn't be used, even the police force are banning them for use on the their dogs. This woman should be ashamed of herself, no wonder the poor dog looked miserable with spikes digging into its neck everytime it makes a wrong move :(

What do you mean EVEN the police force?????  One bad handler doesn't make them all bad - and don't belive everything you read in the paper.
- By Lea Date 28.01.04 19:56 UTC
Would you like to elaborate Joe.
When I heard about Nanner using one (who has had very well behaved GSD's and Irish wolf hounds all her life) I did wonder, but knew nothing about them, and she is the typoe of women that,m if a 'expert' tells her something, she goes along with it.
Have never heard of them sinbce, so would like to know more about them. NEVER going to use them on my dogs tho.
Lea :)

I agree with your comments about the pinch collars - they're cruel in my mind.  My comment was about the 'even' the police force as if a they're a different species and not at all concerned about the welfare of their dogs. oooops just getting on my high horse.  Joe :)

Please can we keep this thread on topic 'pinch collars' and not the Police Force. Thank you.

Mygirl, pinch collars are no more like a choke (check) chain than a leather collar is to a half-check.
- By mygirl [gb] Date 28.01.04 23:18 UTC
Jeangenie, they are both made of metal links lol that's what i ment ;)
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 28.01.04 23:36 UTC
Yes, but one has spikes that stick into a dog's neck and the other doesn't. Enormous difference.
- By mygirl [gb] Date 28.01.04 23:50 UTC
Ok fair enough, it's not something i use and only remember vaguely.

Please take a look at the Pinch and Prong Collar Information Thread on this subject.

- By DebbieN [gb] Date 28.01.04 21:18 UTC

Thats the thing you can't understand why people would use them and they look awful....To just go by looks alone and condemn something without even trying it is wrong...Like I said in my post before on other thread that they are not for everyone....If you do not no how to properly fit them and use them then they should not be used...The same with any correction collar...Look at choke chains most people use these and think wow these are great but all they are causing is pain to the neck as well as the back/spine.Choke chains for them to work must be given a side correction, and with little dogs that means you must get down to the dogs level to give a proper side correction. if you are able to use these great and your dog listens great. Buckle collar can cause alot of strain/damage on the neck/spine/back from the dog pulling so much on them...A halti must be given a side correction and many people snap back which causes the dogs head to go backwards :( no chance of ever going back to a buckle when using these types.

With Junior (Yes a Boston Terrier) I tried buckle no go then a choke chain no go, all on advice from my obedience teacher then she suggested the prong when all else failed. Now I use a prong and a buckle and we are almost totally on a buckle now. Junior never yelped at all being on this collar, no pain I tried it myself on my arm cause I thought they were very cruel.

I don't think people should be ready to get rid of something or say people are cruel for using them if they themselves no nothing about them. But you should try all other methods first before trying them. I don't think petstores should be allowed to sell them, I think only training classes where the people have been trained on the proper way to fit and use them should be allowed to sell them and to me that goes for all types of training collars.

when it comes down to it its all about what you feel is right, if someone chooses to use one then thats there choie and its not for me to condemn them. Personally, id no sooner use a choke chain either.

Was commenting not judging. :)

Andy, if you feel that they are cruel and inflict pain and sometimes actual injury, and this is avoidable, do we not have a right to condemn, or should we let others do as they wish, without comment, because it is none of our business. I dare say in skilled hands and exceptional training circumstances it may just be accepted but not as a suitable collar to walk the dog to meet the children from school

It is possible to teach a dog not to pull without "corrections" of any kind, although i agree it can take a lot of persistence and patience :)
