I got a 11 month old staffordshire bull terrier yesterday, his name is tyson.. i dont have a problem with that name but there are 2 other staffies in my area called tyson so it kinda bothers me. I was wondering if its safe to change his name at 11 months old or if it would confuse him and drive him insane... is changing it possable without any problems??
We got Glazby in November last year as an 18 month old boxer dog and changed his name from Scratch to Glazby and it hasn't really bothered him.
Went through lots of calling his new name and being ignored and then whenever he did happen to look over he got lots of fusses and treats which I think he associated with the new name (probably thought it was a command) but he now comes to his name all the time!!

My dog actually answers to 2 names. My dad calls him one name and me and mum call him another and he answers to both and doesn't have a problem. I don't think it will affect yours. Tyson is cool but what name were you thinking?
Both of my dogs have several names (some not suitable to put on here :D ) and answer to them all. :)

If you could pick a name that sounded similar to Tyson, it may help lessen any confusion. For example, pick a name that has the "I" sound in "Tyson". He'll recognize that sound and even if its different, he'll still think its his own name. Or choose a name with "son" at the end. Of course, as other people suggested, a new name probably wouldn't bother him very much, whether it rymed or not. =)

I got a 2yo Am Cocker in Nov. Hios name was Peter. We decided on the way home to change it to Beano. We (me and my 2 children) Started calling it from the following morning(we didnt get home till 11.30pm!!!!!!!). It took him all of an hour to realise I was calling him!!!!!!!!!!!! And have never had an problems since!!!! ~Although, within 4 hours, If I went anywhere, he was looking for me!!!!!!!!!!!!

Have changed the names of a 5 year old and a 7 year old and there was no problem at all, takes a couple of days for them to know you are calling them and then they can ignore you just like they always do. ;)

hiya,
several years ago i aquired a cocker, his name was "muffy". he was 18 months old and i changed his name to "badger" (some might say, not much improvement there! hahahaha) and he coped fabulously with it. no problem at all. in fact, he acted like he'd always been called badger.
good luck with your new staffie.

I think most of us change our dogs names from the original. How many of them get known by something else when we create those silly pet names for them? A friend recently asked why I called my dog 'Charlie Biscuit' when talking about him affectionately - obviously because the two words just went together and I used them a million times when training him as a pup. They've stuck. She then admitted that she called hers Jakey Wakey!! Aren't we mad?
PS We've also got Tealy Wheely (formally known as Teal), who started out as Katie but we couldn't get on with that!!

Mmm Im guilty to Bradley is:- Mr B, Brae, stink bomb, pervert (he steals my underwear) jowly jowly and last but not least, great big furry kissing cushion. All of which he resonds in the appropriate way
Tank is a great name for a Staff...was one of the considerations for our Staff pups.
I'm sure he'll be fine with the new name.
I took on a Scottie a few years back who was 2 yrs old. His name was Roddy and I changed it to Fergus...he responded quite happily to it after a while when he realised how much praise he got! :-)

I think the name Tank is great too! You've just gotta be a little careful how you make that into a "pet" name. You can't really go around calling him Tanky *anky, flows quite nicely off the tongue but not very appropriate!!
