Topic Dog Boards / General / Seat Belt for dogs

I heard that you can get seat belts for dogs and wondered if anyone can give me more information on them. Would these be suitable for a Labrador and does the dog have to remained seated or are they able to lay down without moving around too much. Do they attach onto the seatbelt already in the car?

Thanks in advance, Rachel

One of our rescue volunteers always used a doggy seatbelt and they are very good they do attatch to the ordinary belt fixing, even the most boisterous dog was ok in one.

Yes, they come in about 4 different sizes and an ordinary seat belt loops through the harness to hold the dog steady. The dog would be able to move around comfortably but not too much, and could certainly lie down on the back seat. I used to use one when I only had 1 dog (smaller than a labrador) and found them excellent, but graduated to a cage in the back when I got more dogs.

My husband is frequently changing cars (works for a leasing company), so the seatbelt has been invaluable. There is a lady in our dog club who uses one for her lab quite happily.

We've been using a seatbelt for our BSd, but she is a wriggler when excited and keeps stepping on the done up car seat belt and undoing it! With the position of the belt, too, we found she tended to get tangled so have decided to give up on it.....if the belt had been higher up on the car seat belt, if you see what i mean, it would have probably solved the second problem at least.

Does anyone else have a problem with the car seat belt coming un done in this way?

They are great, i use one for our Rottie! he can lay down or sit up. Yes the seat belt in the car threads through a loop in the doggy seat belt.

Greetings,
I've used the Batzi belt for my two small dogs for the past 4 years. It comes with a metal triangle and a strap with two swivelsnaps. They wear regular harnesses and the clip keeps them secure. It fits onto any seatbelt and doesn't get in the way when a person needs to use it. My dogs have been saved many times from slamming into the back of my seat when I've had to make sudden slow downs, especially on the German autobahns. I think the most important thing in figuring out a way to safely secure your dog is to ensure that he won't get tangled up if he wants to turn around before laying down. Many doggy belts are designed to be looped through the belt and they don't swivel. I had to get rid of the first set that I used because of this. Good luck. Btw, Batzi has online ordering system if you want to take a lok at what they have to offer.
