Topic Dog Boards / Health / Spaying???

Hi all
Hope everyone is well.

My vet has told me that he will spay Buffy at 4 and half months, is this too early health wise?
I had been prepared for 5 and half months but 4mths seems so yound, she will still be such a baby.

If he does it that young will it effect her growth and personality at all?

Thanks in advance

Debbie

I personally wouldn't have her spayed before her first birthday, to let her grow up and mature a bit. I like them to have one season anyway. But different people have different views.

Debbie,

Early spaying is increasingly common, especially in the U.S.   It is not too early health wise, perhaps your vet is avoiding any possible chance that Buffy woudl be near her first season.  It will not affect her personality and it is unlikely to have a material effect on her growth.

I've had bitches spayed before their first season and after their first season. GSDs, mixed breed, Cairn terrier and Yorkie.  I have also owned intact bitches.  To be perfectly honest, I have never noticed any differences that could be related to early or late spay, neutered or intact.  And no changes in personality, rate of growth, weight or coat after spaying.  That's my personal experience, others may believe otherwise.

There are lots of theories about spaying versus not spaying and the best age to spay, but there is no conclusive evidence one way or the other. You can find studies that support almost any view on the subject.

My advice would be to ask you vet why he or she wants to spay Buffy early.  If you are not comfortable with the answer - wait to spay. She's your dog -- not your vet's.

Thanks for your replys.
She is most defanatly getting spayed i was just concerned that it may cause her harm to spay her at 4 and half months.
