Topic Dog Boards / General / Unnatural for a 9 month old puppy?
- By spotty dog [gb] Date 26.01.04 10:48 UTC
I have a 9 month old dalmation puppy who acted like a puppy before she went into season. She has her moments now but is not half as hyper as she was before she had her season. Shes been finished her season for 2 weeks now but there still isn't much change in her behaviour.
I know some people will think I'm lucky but I want my hyper puppy back. She sleeps a hell of a lot, she's still in bed now, my 2 kids have been up and gone off to school, she just lifts her head up off the bed and then goes back to sleep. Is this something that happens when they go into season or has she just matured?
If I was to go up and put her collar and lead on she'd willingly go for a walk(not enthusiastically) and run wild if she met a friend when out.
Shall I just accept she's changed?
I think it's Jeangenie who has the dalmations, I would be interested for your opinion on this.
I'm going upstairs now to wake her and take her for her walk whether she likes it or not.

It is quite nprmal for a bitch to be a bit mopey and subdied a few weeks after a season.  She will return to her normal self though should be a bit more mature.  This maturity is what you would expect and is one reason why I would never spay a bitch before at least one season, as I don't want forever puppies, as I prefer mine as adults :D

You will be wishing she will calm donw in a few weeks I bet :D

Hi,
Without seeing her I couldn't give a definitive reason for the change in her behaviour. It could indeed be that she's feeling more 'grown-up' - it could be she's brewing a humdinger of a phantom (I would put her on two raspberry leaf tablets twice a day, and double the dose in about 6-7 weeks' time for another 6 weeks or so) - or it could be coincidental and she's feeling slightly off-colour for another reason. Out of those choices my instinct would be that she's going to have a phantom - keep up the exercise and keep her busy. Of course, if she seems unwell then don't hesitate to get the vet to check her over - you don't want to risk an infection getting hold.

Hope this helps - good luck.
:)

Spotty Dog,

No bitch suddenly changes into a calmer, more mature dog just because they have had a season. And certainly no 9 month old dog, intact or neutered, should be a couch potato.

I would keep an eye on her and take her to the vet if she does not perk up very soon.
