Rose, my 5 mth old BC has recently started worrying me. When she is on the beach, if she sees people walking towards us (but still at a distance) and they are not walking a dog, she runs up to them and a few yards in front of them starts to bark like mad at them. She then circles around them whilst barking. She has done this four times now, and it is always with people without dogs. I have tried to distract her with squeeky toys and shouting her back to me in a playful manner. Even tempting her with titbits doesn't help. I run to the people and apologise, but it doesn't help telling them that she is just a pup, as they have already been frightened by a dog running at them in an aggressive manner. Any suggestions please.
PS Rose goes to dog obedience classes so socialises very well with people and other dogs. She also doesn't pull towards people she passes when on a lead. She is very friendly to people at other times.

I'd suggest keeping her on a lead (preferably an extending lead or a long line with a training harness) until you can get her through this stage.

It's hard to distract a dog when her mind is set on other things. I've always found it best to play with a toy when there are no (or few) distractions and then I put the toy in my pocket while they are really enjoying it (mean eh!) Then when I produce it again they are there like a shot. Sometimes I might put it away again straight away. Then every time the toy comes out I have my dog's attention. With lots of practice and gradually increasing the level of distraction you can get them to choose to play with you instead of running over to other people, unless of course you say she can. Meanwhile, you must keep her on a long line and prevent her from getting herself (and you) into trouble whilst you are going through the 'daddy or chips?' stage.

carole all i can say is snap.
We have a GSD 9 months she used to run up to people and bark like crazy but if they had a dog then fine should would run around with the dog.
Well we have no bought a 15 metre utilty (e-bay £5.99) which we attach to her back pack and as soon as we here people or say them we can just stand on the rope and reel her in then to get past the people without her barking i treat and say good girl until we pass then off we go again it has been roughly 3 weeks and is slowly working.
On the street she is on the lead and halti (bad puller) and again i see people and treat her until we pass and she is fine. Yes we do go through lots of treat but you could substitute it with her food her cut her meals down.
We have now got to the stage where i can speak to her and walk past people with out any barking, so this method does work.
I use liver cake, tuna cake or hot dogs, if you would like recipes please ask
All the best

Thanks for your suggestions. It looks like she will have to have her freedom curtailed for a short time until she stops this behaviour. Cordelia, I would very much like the recipe for your liver cake and tuna cake.
Thanks everybody!

liver cake
300g lambs liver
8oz plain flour
2eggs
3 cloves garlic
and a little water if mixture is too dry.
Pop all ingredients abouve into a blender or you can use a hand blender. Pop in a lined swiss roll tin and back on gas 6 until is spongey.
then cut into bit size peices it is best to freeze some as it goes off quick but you can over come this by cut it up and putting it on a baking tray then back until it is a bit hard.
For Tuna cake just replace the liver with 3 small tins of tuna in spring water or sunflower oil well strained. With the tuna i do not put egg in as my older GSD can not have eggs or meat just use water to mix.
I worn you dogs loveeeeeee it and will go mad for it :-D

Cordelia thats a lovely tuna recipe thanks. Im experimenting with heart cake next but suspect the heart will have to be precooked as its tough to cut raw.
Hi Cordelia
I have seen your recipe, and wonder now, if you or any other might help me.
I live ind Denmark, and I don't know how much gasmark 6 is. Do you know the number ind degrees, f.ex 200 degrees or something like that?
I think Luna would love your tuna cakes, (thats what she will be getting, I don't like liver myself, so won't cook that)
