Topic Dog Boards / General / cold snap... -15
- By EMMA DANBURY [gb] Date 22.01.04 15:06 UTC
Has anyone else heard about the cold snap we are expecting -15 during the day and -24 at night.
Poor Bradley's feet will freeze and he will get his lips stuck to the back door (he pushes his face up against the window when he wants to come in)

I have been keeping an eye on the weather forecast since they mentioned the cold and possible/probable snow ;) Hadn't heard it was going down that low though ...good grief!!

I checked the weather report and down here in Milton Keynes it will only reach about -4 to -7 so not too bad but bad enough!!

Greenland - keep your cold weather to yourself!!!
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 22.01.04 15:24 UTC
Most winters we have nights when it gets to -11 here (the first year we moved here we had a frost in June! ) but next week is apparently going to be 'noticeably colder than usual winters'.
- By EMMA DANBURY [gb] Date 22.01.04 15:37 UTC
I have to admit us southerners are soft when it comes to the cold.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 22.01.04 15:45 UTC
We're pretty much south, but bang in the middle of the country, so it gets hot in the summer and cold in the winter.
:)

This wil be my dog's first experience of snow.  I can't wait to see how he reacts.  He is only just 1 year old bless him. :-)

If you go to BBC Weather you can put in your postcode and get a 5 day forecast for your area

My Boxer pup had first experience of snow in December - when he saw it from the kitchen door he did his "Scooby Doo" expresion then growled at it - and only when it didn't move/growl back did he investigate it more - it was so funny. Once he went outside he wouldn't come back in. He was most disappointed then next morning as the snow had gone!

-15 is pretty mild to what we're used to!  If you think that's cold, try going to work on Monday with a high of -30 and an evening high of -42!  Yep, that's Calgary for you.  Luckily enough, we love the cold weather and the snow.  Especially my dogs.....they are the original snow dogs!  Plus we also have a foot of snow to look forward to on Saturday!  (I'm actually English and been living here since 2002 so it has taken me a while to adjust!)

Kind regards,

Charlene and the snow dogs

Here Here ..Sandrah.......The garden has gone from a Paddy Field to a Swamp.  Keep expecting to find a Hippo "wallowing"!!!!!

My huskies are counting down the days.  Finally I may be able to get photos of them in real snow without having to add it in in Photoshop!
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 22.01.04 21:54 UTC
Well here in Manchester it doesn't look as though it will go much below 1 degrees, so it looks as though we won't be having any snow as usual!!  Have to say I prefer the rain to ice, though I do love snow, but that might be because I never get to see it here.
- By hippychick [gb] Date 23.01.04 06:58 UTC
Due to get -15 here over the weekend in the north but because i live near the beach we seem to get less than the villages inland, a week ago we set off for ringcraft and as we left our town, and headed towards ringcraft the fields were covered in snow and the road was getting bad,we had to turn back,as we were going into village lanes and they were pretty bad, when we mentioned  to peoplethe next day, they said oh thats normal,i have only lived near the sea for over a year,so must remember that when they say snow and we don't have any every body around us may be blocked in.
- By Lissie-Lou [gb] Date 23.01.04 23:50 UTC
Looks like we might get -4 or -5 here in Ceredigion.  Not too bad...it's got to be better than this damn rain :(

The latest from the BBC weather site Weather

The latest forecast
After what has been a rather mild and damp week for most, the weather is set to take a major change to much colder conditions through the weekend and into next week.

Freezing temperatures and snow look set to hit much of the country, the Met Office is advising, with the cold spell lasting for several days.

Night-time frosts will become widespread, and daytime temperatures will also struggle to get above freezing. A strong, biting wind setting in, it will feel even colder.

Heavy snow is expected to be an additional hazard in some areas. At the moment, forecasts suggest that parts of Scotland and eastern England may be at particular risk of seeing some hazardous conditions and disruption to travel.

However, the colder weather is still some days away, and the detail may

My local weather says it will be -4 on tuesday bbrrr
- By nanuk [us] Date 23.01.04 19:14 UTC
I still find it amusing that if the UK receives more than 1cm of snow everything comes to a standstill!!  I know they don't have the resources such as snowplows to clear the snowfall but why don't garages start selling winter tires for cars?  I live in a small village called Bragg Creek which is 40 minutes outside Calgary (it was on a BB2 programme last year) and we are forecast 20cms of snow for this evening and tomorrow!!

Sorry, I know this post has nothing to do with dogs!

Kind regards,

Charlene

Hi Nanuk, I agree totally about how unprepared this country is when it snows. The councils seem astonished that winter comes every year! But we can't run cars on winter tyres in the usual wet weather - not enough grip on the road surface. It's not worth it for maybe a week of snow maximum.
:)
- By nanuk [us] Date 23.01.04 19:28 UTC
Very true Jeangenie........you make a very valid point.  You could always borrow my dogs and my sled and use that for the weeks worth of snow!!

I have to say that I personally love the snow and so do my dogs.  I have a foot and a half in my garden currently and it has been here since last October!  I can't even remember what my grass looks like......I'm sure it's pretty dead by now!

Kind regards,

Charlene

I think I prefer the BBC forecast that gives sun/light rain, sun, sun/light rain, sun/light rain, rather than Light Rain  AM Light Rain  AM Showers  Rain / Snow   for the next four days and is much warmer than the second site given.
- By Melodysk [gb] Date 23.01.04 21:00 UTC
BBC forecast always errs on the side of caution though ....I watched the weather forecast earlier today and it was much more fierce than the website LOL
- By briedog [gb] Date 23.01.04 21:35 UTC
