My bitch had 6 pups 6 days ago. All has been fine. Her stools have been slightly loose since about 1 week before the whelping. Postwhelping I have given her only easily digestible foods (rice, scrambled eggs, carrot pure, boiled fish, boiled meat etc..) Yesterday I started giving her puppy food (more protien), now all hell has broken loose!
She was up 5 times in the night to go out and poo very loose and with some blood (red). This morning she is pooing liquid. She has no fever. Temp is 38.3. She is taking care of pups and they seem fine.
I have called the vet and she said to feed her small amounts of wellboiled rice and tiny amounts of lean meat. We discussed that usually a dog with stomach issues should have no food for 24 hrs, but because of the puppies I must give her food. She will eat. We discussed the possibility of worms. I have so far only dewormed her before mating. But the vet thought not worms, and worming her now might aggrivate the whole thing.
So needless to say, I am worried about her getting dehydrated and the pups getting no food.
Any advice or thoughts will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Pongal, I don't have any huge experience as I have only bred one litter. However my bitch also had horrendous diarrhoea post whelping, I was advised to give her some mashed potato mixed in with her normal food. I worked like magic. Give it a try, can't do any harm even if it does no good.
Good Luck, Dawn R.

I have had this problem in the past when trying to add a new food to fast. Your best to monitor your bitch... feeding her a bland diet ie boiled chicken breast (would not use other meats at this time) and rice. You will soon see a difference in her stools. When she has been solid for a few days slowly start adding her normal food along with the rice. When you gave her the puppy food her whole system could not cope with all that was new in her body so quickly. No worries though, she will be fine. Monitor the growth of the pups and carry forward as you have done giving your bitch a very bland diet which should in turn help the current situation.
When adding a high protein food after a bitch has whelped, doing it gradually along with her current food will slowly wean her stomach onto the newly introduced food.
Hope this helps.....

OOps sorry forgot to add, my vet has also suggested in the past to give 1/2 cup 3 times a day of natural bio yogurt as this too can help with her stools.

Thanks for all the advice!  This seems to be a common problem. My girl "Maya" ate 3 of 6 placentas. :) Here is an update. My gal is much better today. My breeder called and told me to give her small amounts of lean ground beef raw, mixed with pure of carrots (the baby jars), and something that I don't know the name of in English....it is the husks of wheat ground up and used for baking healthy fiber filled bread. This mixture I should give only a tablspoon at a time 10 times a day. She will not drink water so I mixed natural yoghurt in the water. I have also been giving her a course of Canikur. Canikur is the best stuff ever for stomach problems. Unfortunately it is a bit expensive :(
Also my breeder says to forget all about puppy food for this breed. It makes them sick because it is too rich. So even when the pups go on the regular dog food it must be adult food that is low protein (20 - 22 %) and fat about 10 - 14 %. Puppy food is often 30 % protein and this does not work. i know this is totally against what all breeding literature saya and what many breeders say but my breeder says this after 25 years of experience. My pups are 1 week old today, 1 boy and 5 girls! All doing well and soooo cute!
