I was flicking through the sun newspaper during my break at work where i came across an article about a rhodesian ridgeback (shire) who sadly had to be pts due to having cancer. Shire's owner had been told it would be 163 pounds for cremation and for one reason or another couldnt pay... so 11 year old shire might be resturned to his owner...
I find this so sad :(
While i know its choice to have our pets cremated etc but it comes to something when the vet cant deal with people compassionatley (sp?)
Poor shire.. lets hope he rests in peace soon
Plus his owner finds the money somehow

it is a very sad world. i was reading in my paper the other day that two young boys untied an dog from a shoppping mall and eventually led it onto the motorway where it was hit by several cars dying from its injuries. what makes it worse is that someone must know who has done this and left the owner and its family devasted not to mention what the dog has gone through. i hope the people are caught soon and get more than a slap on the wrist before they lose control and maybe start getting their kicks out of it.

Its the pet crematorium that charges not the vet, although the vet would have to charge for clinical waste disposal if that is what they opted for because the vet has to pay for disposal, I doubt you would get to cremate your Grannie for free so I can't see it ever being free for dogs.

Isabel.
I dont think it will and should ever be free.. all im saying is it clearly seems from the news article that she loved her dog and wanted him cremated... (as i think most of us would) Its a shame they cant come to some kind of agreement so everyone is happy all round
I still think its sad

I don't see why, though, that the vet should fit the bill it would be like accusing a Doctor of a lack of compassion if they did not help out with the funeral directors bill.

I agree with Isabel. We all have to cut our coat according to our cloth (if we are wise anyway) and therefore, as the thread on vets fees on the Visitor Forum, you should prepare for this eventuality.
Vets will euthanase and dispose of dogs (for which there is a fee) or return the body to you for burial or arrange for cremation (for which there is also a fee).
We, the owners are responsibility for the care and welfare of our pets and if we cannot afford them we should not have them. It is as simple as that. It is not someone else's responsibility to foot the bill for those who have not made adequate contingency plans.
We all have jobs and we all expect to be paid for them!

Hold on i didnt say they should do it free of charge im just saying maybe let her pay for it weekly.
Im just a softie when it comes to animals and their passing..
My guess is that some kind soul would of come forward and paid for the dogs cremation by now

The first vet I had when I had my kitten was very understanding and when I told him that I would have trouble paying for some treatment that my kitten had he was fine he suggested an amount to pay weekly and when we could afford a bit extra we paid that to him. He jnew the family so that might have helped a bit. I can't see why the vet can't come to some arrangement with the owner's either. They should be in the profession to help suffering animals.

Exactly they are in the profession to do precisely that, help suffering animals. Not subsidise owners who cannot pay for cremation; there is a vast difference!

They may be vets because they care about animals, but they still have a business to run, including bills to pay. Anyone who has had anything to do with running a business knows about cashflow and customers who do not pay, in full, promptly can cause a lot of problems. If lots of customers decided that they couldn't afford to pay straight away, the business would soon fail. Our vets are quite young and have recently bought the practise. They, undoubtedly, have a bank loan to do this which will require repayments every month without fail - the bank won't let them pay their installments in installments :)

Exactly Daisy and please lets not loose sight of the fact that it is the crematorium that charges and will look for payment up front from the vet.

I can see all your points but again i feel sorry for the owner, (I know how i feel when i had to have my rat pts this morning) She must be devestated :(

Our Pet Crematorium(thst is the one we use)does not bill the vet but the owner gives you 30 days to pay & if there are problems they will come to an arrangement as the are dog & horse people & very understanding
