Hi guys,

Bit of an odd one this!

Long, long ago, back in the age of the dinosaurs, when I was a child and Jackanory was still on ( if you don't know what 'Jackanory' was, You're probably too young to know the answer:) ), I remember hearing a story, from a childrens book, and its still rattling around in my head today.  I can't for the life of me rmember the title.  It was about a fairground carousel , the ones with wooden horses on it, and somesort of magic happened and all the horses came alive and went off to have individual adventures.- one of them , I think, jumped into the sea and became one of the 'white horses/waves'   I know that this is hopelessly vague, but any help would be great. It's really bugging me, I've tried to search on various search engines with no luck.

Cheers mates'

Ali :)

(Yes, I know I'm very SAD, but there you go...)

Is it this one? Childrens Book
- By copper_girl [gb] Date 21.01.04 21:35 UTC
I don't remember that, but talking about kids stuff - am I the only person on the planet that remember Pogles Wood?  Can't be, you know, Pippin and Tog the little squirrelly animal thing and the pipe cleaner people????  Hmmmmm maybe its just me
- By LF [gb] Date 21.01.04 21:53 UTC
It's not just you Copper Girl, but I know what you mean :)  Anytime I ask people if they remember Pogle's Wood they look at me blankly!!!  I loved Tog the squirrelly thing :D  It was a briliant programme, much better than that nasty Andy Pandy boy, who was incredibly mean to Teddy ;)

I do remember Jackanory, and only very vaguely remember Pogles Wood.  I remember the wooden tops only slightly better, but I loved Hectors House.

PS - sorry, no I don't remember the story book

Hi guys-I remember Pogles Wood. I tried to explain it to my other half and he thinks I made it up.  (but then again, he thinks that Bagpuss is silly and never understood my hero worship of ivor the engine-silly man!!

This post has been really bugging me as I feel I can half remember not only the Jackanory story but also the cover of the book.  I can recall the cover being pink and turquoise with a white fairground carousel.  Of course I could just be making this up, at my age the mind plays tricks on you.  It's one of those things that you feel if you try NOT to recall the information it will just come flooding back.

I had a little look for Jackanory information (yes I know it's sad but I am off sick at the moment, can't drive or dog walk so have nothing better to do!) and was amazed to find that the programme had run for 30 years with 3500 x 15 minute programmes.  I did find the theme tune tho!

Jackanory Theme    (ooh I am so pleased I managed that link!)

I shall carry on thinking but can't get up into loft to find my old books at the moment!

This gets worse by the minute!  Someone called 'Caroline from Nottingham' posted the same question on a book-sleuth website back in July!    She thinks the horses were called Pepito and Juanita amongst others!

It doesn't look like she got an answer!

Ali, Liberty and anyone else interested ......

I too have been bugged by this ALL day!  Eventually I think I have managed to find it although am not totally satisfied as I can't find a description of the book as yet.

I believe it was called Moon on the Water by Nina Warner Hooke.  First of all I thought it was by Joan Aitken but then managed to find the Jackanory story books and it could well be this one!  I have put a link below to the Amazon reference:

Amazon books

I won't be happy until I have read it now!

Hello, all you sad chaps!

RESULT!!!!!!!:)

I found the book   -    It is Moon on the Water, by Nina Warner-Hook, thanks to whoever suggested it.  I managed to find an internet sevice that 'finds' books that are out of print and they found it for me.  I had to pay £11 for a rather battered copy, but who cares.  I've just started reading it to my kids, its just as I remembered.

Thanks for the advice
I can sleep tonight now :)

mmmm wombles.......

Underground, overground, wombling free,
the wombles of wimbledon common are we,
making good use of the things that we find,
the things that the everyday folk leave behind

Uncle bulgaria, who can remember a time when he wasnt behind The Times......

Any advances on that? (without cheating and using google?)

I beg to differ ....

Unlce Bulgaria, he can remember the days when he wasn't behind The Times with his map of the world
pick up the papers and take them to Tobermory

Wombles are organised, work as a team, wombles are tidy and wombles are clean
Underground overground wombling free, the wombles of Wimbledon Common are we!

I am SO sad!
- By theemx [gb] Date 16.02.04 19:17 UTC
Yep, my memory not as good as urs.......

However, i AM sadder....i found a site.......

Underground, overground, wombling free,
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we,
Making good use of the things that we find,
Things that the everyday folks leave behind.

Uncle Bulgaria, he can remember the days
When he wasn't behind the times
With his map of the world:
Pick up the papers and take them to Tobermory.

Wombles are organized, work as a team,
Wombles are tidy and Wombles are clean,
Underground, overground, wombling free,
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we.

People don't notice us, they never see,
Under their noses a Womble may be,
We womble by night and we womble by day,
Looking for litter to trundle away.

We're so incredibly utterly devious,
Making the most of everything,
Even bottles and tins:
Pick up the pieces and make them into something new
Is what we do.

Underground, overground, wombling free,
The Wombles of Wimbledon Common are we,
Making good use of the things that we find,
Things that the everyday folks leave behind
