Hi
saw an advert in the local free paper requesting a stud for my breed...elkhound.Since we are quite a numerically small breed an evryone knows each other I thought I'd phone and try to point the person in the right direction..i.e back to the bitches breeder.
Well to cut a long story short I asked who she'd bought the bitch from and she said...Mayfield kennels. She had gone along to have a look and didn't even know what an elkie was just thought they looked cute!.This being the fact I told her that she would have problems finding a stud since no reputable stud owner is going to touch her bitch because shes not hip scored. The woman asked how she could get it done and when I said she couldn't cos she wasn't KC reg she said'oh yes shes registered and has full pedigree papers'.When I explained she would be DLRC reg She had no idea about the difference and asked how she could get her KC reg etc.I told her she couldn't so she said she'd use another Mayfield kennels bred elkie....until I explained that they are all bred from the same 2 dogs. She asked then where I'd got mine(I gave no names!!) and asked me to put her in touch so she could buy her own stud!! She did express a concern that she may have problems selling the pups since they are not a well known breed but said she was sure she wouldn't have more than 4!
She then said she had a couple of months yet since her bitch wasn't 1 till feb!!and that she also had a 6 month old Husky she was going to breed aswell .
Wish I hadn't phoned now...hate to think of these poor bitches being used to make money but theres nothing more I can do.

One wonders whom she will sell the pups to and how often they will come back to her before they finish up in rescue. Wonder what made her think they would only have 4. Have you let Robert know? I think he would want to be told about it if only to know where the pups in rescue are coming from. You have done all you could but all you have achieved really is to upset yourself, think you were very controlled, good job you were not face to face things may have been different.

she was under the impression they only have small litters...told her its not true and to expect up to 10 but that 7/8 was an average litter.

i think that is the worst thing in the world when people just breed dogs 4 cash to be honest i dont think that breeding in any way does make money and infact it probably ends up costing the breeder something like double in supplies as they need things like whelping boxes etc on top of that they need to pay all the vet bills for the pups jabs and 9 times out of ten a breeder will end up rushing a pregnant bitch to the vets because of unexpected problems or just plain stupidity of not doing any research on the topic and to be honest it does add up to a hell of alot
another prob is that if the breeder doesnt no what they are doing they will probably either kill the pups or worse still the bitch all because of 'stupidity'
be honest how many so called breeders/pup buyers have you been approached by with the IQ of a pot plant?
all goes to show one thing ignorance can be cured but stupidity is for life

Well done Archer for trying. I'm afraid I sometimes despair. When I was a child, pedigree dogs were few and far between. Most people had mongrels and because money and Vets were short, if they got pregnant, the pups were put into a bucket!! I certainly wouldn't want to go back to that but times have changed sooo much. If people were lucky enough to be able to afford a pedigree dog, they went to a breeder, who tended to be a wealthy (eccentric!) person with plenty of room, years worth of knowledge of their breed and a passion for their dogs.
These days how times have changed. The internet makes communication so much easier, and everyone has cars so travelling to a stud dog is no problem - my family didn't have a car until I was about 10 years old! Now EVERYONE wants to be a dog breeder, whether it's because they think having a good temperament is a good enough reason to produce more pups for the world to share, or whether they think it's an easy way to recoup the money they've paid for their pup and multiply the amount by 10 and have a nice little earner!! Now we have breed rescues rushed off their feet and dogs homes full to bursting.
Oh how times have changed!

The sad truth is that if they are breeding to make money they are unlikely to look into it enough to know that it isn't that simple. And those who do make the effort to do the groundwork first aren't usually motivated by the making money side of things.

Well if she's on the internet i'd expect her showing up as a guest in a few months :(

There was an advert for some Elkie pups bred on from stock from there in the summer. Jackie H I think was contacted for advice on Issues regarding it's skin. Veery much loved pet, costing the people an arm and a leg in Vets fees. Also there was a couple in wWhich magazine feature on Insurance with an Elkhound with problems.
With the made up pedigrees, and the fact that some of the pups will be from brother sister, first cousin matings with no health testing, can only lead to hertache. Sadly most of the rescues the breed gets in are from these.

Archer, well done for trying to help sadly the saying " the road to hell is paved with good intentions" seems to have some true here, by trying to help you have uncovered a "small time money grabbing breeder"
Well done for trying though.
Karen

I'd have a quiet word with the Secretary of the Breed Club as she keeps the puppy list and can keep an eye out for this person resurfacing at some point.

Hi Robert, thank for letting us know, it is people like you who make it worthwhile. We are told off so often for trying to let people know the down side of casual breeding and it is wonderful to know that sometimes we succeed and that the person involved is kind enough to post and say so. Well done you. :)

well done Robert...as Jackie says its people like you that make it worth while. We sometimes feel that we're banging our heads against a brick wall!!It sometimes feels that everyone out there is trying to make a quick £ out of their dogs...nice to be proved wrong!(not that I often am LOL)

as i am sure you all remember from my first post - my little 13 week old bailey is the result of an accidental mating that took place in the fields. Taz the dad is mine! Anyway we tracked down the bitches owner afterwards, (both dogs were staffords luckily), after some discussion i agreed to take one of the pups........ anyway in responce to the post that the breeder usually ends up paying out more money, i would like to inform you of the bitches owner. I kept close contact visiting on average twice a week. She gave birth in her basket- they were originally going to put her in the shed- mid October!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :(
They did fork out for some whelpi, i brought some puppy food for them, and with respect to the vets fees, the owner asked each new owner for the money for the jabs!! Obviously these new owners in my opinion are novices (nothing wrong with that i might add) because they all paid the money, and took the pups between 5.5 weeks and 6 weeks, because imo the owners had had enough - but were using the excuse that the bitch had had enough of them........ to sum the bitch had 9 pups all sold at £300 - £350, (except Bailey - he was free) so this inexperienced breeder has made a decent sum of money :( ..... and it all went smoothly (luckily). And im sure that the bitches owner will ACCIDENTLY mate her again!!!!!!! :( :( :(
