Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Breeding my GSD

Hi, my WGSD bitch is 15 months old and came into season the other week which was her 2nd, so I had her mated to a friends dog who is also a WGSD.  This is the first time I've bred any dogs so its all really new.  When will I know if she's pregnant?? she mated about 4 times over last weekend and tied together.  Is there anything I should do now to prepare her incase she is pregnant.  I feed her 1 meal per day at present should I increase her food now or wait till a little bit later on?? also someone mentioned about her being wormed and not sure if I need to do this now or if they meant before they were mated and finally how do I go about registering the puppies.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, also not 100% sure on the whelping.  But fingers crossed.

Without wanting to sound rude , would it not have been best to ask these questions BEFORE mating your bitch ?

Buy 'The Book of the Bitch' by Evans and White, you can get it on Amazon. Read, and reread it.

1. With a deep chested breed she should really be fed twice a day to avoid the risk of bloat
2. Has she been hipscored, if not, I would seriously look at your options right now as it would be totally irresponsible to breed her unscored, even worse with an unscored dog - you could easily get sued if the resulting pups have problems.
3. Ideally, your bitch should have been at least 2 before being bred from.

Really, guest, these questions should have been addressed beforehand :(

Chole, perhaps we should add that if the mating took place only last weekend then perhaps it is not to late to take the bitch to the vets and have it stopped to give the owner more time to find out what is necessary to insure that the bitch has the best chance of coming through the whelping unscathed and that the resulting pup are fit and trouble free.

IMO the correct age to breed from a bitch is 2 yrs, you may have been a little hasty but its done now.  You can get her scanned around 5 weeks time to confirm if she's pregnant but thats up to you.  I agree with feeding her twice per day and you should introduce more food as her appetite will grow dramatically.  Some people worm their dogs whilst they are pregant, some dont.  Usually from around day 40 till a couple of days post whelp.  Once the pups are born wait at least 14 days before you register them, I assume you mean with the Kennel Club, give them a ring and they will send you forms out to do this or you can down load them from their web site.  With the whelp I strongly advise you to seek help from someone who has experience in this, it can be a very dangerous time for both bitch and pups, if you've never done this before you will almost certinly need help.  Also I'm sure some other experienced breeders on here will be able to give you some very useful advise and some on the other hand will want to have you shot.  Hope this helps x

Hi,
You have been given a lot of good advice about the practicalities by others, so I'll just concentrate on the registration details. I'm assuming that both your bitch and the stud are Kennel Club registered? You will need to contact the Kennel Club and they will send you a Litter Registration pack. You will need to fill in the bitch's registered name and number, and the name and number of the stud dog, and his owners will have to sign it to confirm what date the mating took place.

Then when the pups have arrived you will be able to think up names for them (the rules for this are printed on the form) and send it off with the fee.

If either dog or bitch is not KC registered then you won't be able to register the pups. Whatever you do, don't bother with any other 'registration club'. Their registration is worthless. Better pups aren't registered at all.
:)
