Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Countries ear cropping is allowed?
- By Guest [gb] Date 21.01.04 21:13 UTC
I do not wish to enter a debate on ear cropping, but merely to ask if anyone can point me in the right direction as to where i can find information on which countries allow ear cropping. Any help received will much appreciated. TIA.

Bet I am wrong but I think the USA do Canada may don't think any of the European countries do. OK anyone really know?

Ear cropping is done in Spain.

Christine, Spain.

As far as I can find out it is banned in Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden and Switzerland as well as the UK. Can't find info about France.

PS. I wish I hadn't searched. I've found out so much about the process I feel quite sick. Poor pups. :(

Well done JG, must say are the European union wants to stop docking I am surprised that some are cropping ears.

I doubt it would be legal to send a pup born in this country and send it abroad for ear cropping then bring it back in.

Yes they are, we have alot of breeds come into this country that have been cropped. :-)

I know of quite a few cropped dogs that have been imported to the UK, but they cannot be shown.
- By Wishfairy [gb] Date 22.01.04 15:46 UTC
They can be bred from though.

From what I can gather the AKC was talking about stopping cropping in USA but many breeders/showers are against it because they have paid so little attention to ears for so long they aren't sure what they'd get naturally!

Don't shout if I'm wrong though it's just somethig I read :)

When I was googling about it last night I was astonished to read that US vets recommend it is done because otherwise "Great Danes, Dobermans etc all get ear infections." Yeah right.

One of my GD books (American) advises it to be done as it's closer to those of the wild dogs and helps prevent burst blood vessels in the ears!

Erm... could that be because they only have half the ear

I never realised that the ears need taping and retaping every week or so for months, to keep the cut edge open a long time to prevent crinkly scar tissue distorting them. :(

And if you get it wrong it's awful for all concerned :(  I'm afraid Dizzy is enough work without having to tape plant pots to her head (all the other dogs would laugh at her ;) )
