hi just wondered if anyone knows more than me, i have been busy studing, talking to breeders, asking questions etc
my bitch is of eastaff lines her mum is out of kilvara demolition man and madam evita who is out of ch judael both barrels at nozac and queen salamasena........now juael both barrels was used twicein 4th generation and once in the third my bitches breeder told me they out crossed my bitches mum so if i wanted to breed i can go back into eaststaff...judael lines if i wish, i've also been told that becuase my bitch is a bit leggy 15 and a bit that if i take her back in and kept a bitch she would be an excellent brood bitch now i really wanted to keep a dog so surely if i kept a dog and later if i wanted i could buy a good suitable brood bitch and put those together and would produce the same results ...?????????? now before anyone goes of on one........i'm a very responsible owner and nothing is set in stone imay never go down any of these roads but i am doing the research now and have been for a while....

i think its far easier to either breed or buy in the best bitch you can find-then when the time comes you can take her to any dog you like-youd have loads to choose from-however if youve a male---your taking a chance buying a puppy bitch in, as she may have non of the things required to make the breeding gel :D
id do it the other way around if i where you,

I agree completely with Dizzy. To me if anyone is really interested in producing quality puppies, who are sound in body and mind and a credit to their breed, then the way to go is to buy the best bitch that you can afford from a breeder who consistantly produces quality dogs. The wait to see her grow, assess her virtues and failings (with the help of her experienced breeder) and THEN decide which dog/lines would be most complimentary to her. With that knowledge, for the price of a stud fee and a tank full of petrol, you can use the most suitable dog in the country at the time, who will compliment her and give her the very best chance of producing puppies to be proud of!
Anyone buying in a dog and bitch to mate together, unless they have a crystal ball, are just "producing puppies".

I never mentioned buying in a dog just to breed!!! read again??? basicly should i keep a bitch or dog a good bitch seems to be the way to go or the better option and my bitch is a good example of the breed with an A1 temperment cant fault her atall there just her ears are semi erect but it gives character!!!

I would always go with keeping a bitch and then use the best dogs to get what you want to improve on.
When you have a good male you are at the total mercy of the bitch owners as to who if anyone will want to use him, so would have to buy in a bitch to get a pup from him (no-one sells their best adult bitches, and the pup may not turn out a good match). It also means you would have to have two dogs to get the pup you want, whereas if you have a bitch and choose a suitable partner you have only got to have the one to breed the desired pup.
As most of us are limited to how many dogs and bitches we can keep, if breeding is what fascinates you then breeding a good line of bitches is the way to go.

Scooby, when your bitch was a puppy, your Vet told you that she was undershot. You had many, many posts from experienced breeders on this board, saying don't breed from her. It was suggested that you enter her for shows and join a breed club so that you could meet experienced Staffie owners to ask advice. Did you do that?
You've also said that you didn't buy her "from a recognised breeder" but she is KC registered, and at 10 months your Vet told you that she had luxating patella, a common problem in your breed.
Are you really seriously thinking about breeding from her?

Sorry, please ignore that last question, it doesn't read the way that I said it and I ran out of time to edit it.
I should have said "What sort of puppies do you hope to produce from this bitch?"

Hi Val,
Well i must say i'm pleasantly suprised that you remembered that, but the key word was "MY VET"...it was the vetinery nurse who told me that and as i said at the time i listen but dont always agree and buy the way there is no problem with her teeth or jaw lovely sisscor bite and good strong teeth she just loves to hang on low branches that she can reach when she jumps!!!!!!!
but going back yes if she had any genetic problem then no i would not breed her....trying to arrange through my SBTC yes i did join went to a show in sept last year (brill!!!!realy enjoyed the day packed the family wagon and of we all went) my kids loved it!!!! and yes i spoke to some owners and breeders and believe me she dosn't look like a boxer!!!! hopefully when they have someone at one of the show's who's doing eye testing whitch i belive they do from time to time if not my vet (a different one to my original vet) they where quite large and just money making me thinks i'm now at a little vets same guy remembers everyone just like yer doctor said he would give her a full check up and check her eyes said he would give me a note to say she's been checked but did say it's not a proper eye testing cert but said it would cost £20 for the both a health check is £18 so thats pretty good???????

Scooby, glad you've got a good Vet - it's nice when they remember your name!! But please don't waste your money getting your girl checked by the Vet before breeding. Eye testing must be done by a qualified ophthalmologist, not your local Vet unless he's on the BVA panel, which it doesn't sound as though he is, but please check. Old Staffie breeders are the best people to get breeding knowledge from, especially about her luxating patella, which I believe Staffie breeders are struggling to breed out.

I lost my staffy last year due to a luxating patella...he was just 4 years old and had suffered for 18 months. After 3 surgeries we 'called it a day' to prevent furthe suffering.I'm glad staffy breeders are doing their best to eradicate this problem...it is the most heartbreaking thing to go through!!

Sorry to hear that Archer, but thanks for sharing it.
When we try to explain to people about breeding from dogs with inherited defects I think that some genuinely don't understand the grief that the new owners have and the pain that the dogs they produce suffer. Maybe be its because we just use words without explaining what it actually means? Because their pets have good temperaments - and thank heavens that they do - they think that justifies producing a litter.

so sorry to here about your dog archer.....
Again this could have been a miss diagnosis she hasn't since then had any problems when i took her back to my old vets she was 10/11 mths she's now 19 mths and no sighns of any problems touch wood!!!! when i say to her coming for a walk then, she goes through this little ritual stretches out the front legs low to the ground bum in air then a flex of the back similar to a cat then the back legs stretched out behind almost parallel with the body then a shake of the head a wag of the tail and she's ready to go, maybe it was me be to catious ie thinking everthing wrong with her to protective a type of hypocodriact of a dog owner??????
i know a lot more now i've read i've listend i've asked and looked up info i'm no vet but i see some vets in a different light now ...no offence to any vets on here!!!
i also walk her more on lead now aswell still pulls a bit the worst thing when she darts to one side catches you of gaurd sometimes!!!!!!!

sorry mistake.......hypocodriact..should be....hypochondriac....my apologies!!!!!!!!

If you want to carry on a 'line' and you have the choice, then keep a bitch. You then have the choice of who to mate her to, and not relying on other people to want to use your dog.
