Topic Dog Boards / General / Witnessed Dog get hit by a car :-(
- By LOOBY [gb] Date 20.01.04 20:03 UTC
Have just about stopped shaking......

just after 7 sir and i were walking when out of nowhere this dark dog came charging across the road, no lead and no owners in sight upto me and sir. (it looked liked a lab)

i didnt know the dog and where it came from so i dragged sir of and moved.  Turned round and the dog went into the road and got hit by the oncoming car.......felt sick at the noise.

Didnt see the dog on the road and spotted it running into a garden near the side track it came from with its front paw up.

I went after the driver who was upset and shaky.  There was nothing he could do the dog ran out in front of him.  Found the house and gave details to the owners, their dog ran home but had to be carried in a duvet to their car.  The poor owner was crying.  I hope their dog is okay.  But i really felt for the car driver as it was not his fault.

Needless to say i came home and was weepy and looked at sir who was looking confused at me.

Had a cuppa with loads of sugar and lots of kisses from sir.

wot a nite.

glad sir was on his gentle leader so i could control him, usually for his evening walk i walk him on his normal lead and collar.

I can only imagine seeing the dog being hit, but one of the hardest things is being the one to hit the dog in the first place...

I'm 16 years and have already hit a poor dog with my car... I was coming home from a friend's house one dark evening and was following a truck with a trailer. The truck in front of me put on its brakes and swerved a bit. I automatically let off the gas and started with my brakes. I saw nothing. But soon as I started to speed up again, a big dog ran out of the bushes, from the right side of the car. I had no time to stop. I didn't even take the chance of swerving for fear of crashing my car. The poor dog was hit. Being a huge dog lover, it hurt my heart so much. I cried all the way home. I went inside and my parents thought something horrible happened. They were right. They comforted me and reassured me. My Sibe girl came to greet me and I just couldn't take my arms off of her neck once I began to hug her. It hurt so much to think that the poor, innocent dog was dead because of me. It couldn't have been a pet or a stray, I don't know. But it hurt my heart so much, its unbelievable. Now every time I drive past the area where the dog sleeps now, I feel so sad. But peaceful at the same time because the dog is probably in a better place now.

Being the owner hurts. But being the driver hurts even more.

I do hope you live in the US Sibe luver!!!!!
I have never hit a dog or cat. Just a pheasant. And same scenario. cars in front suddnely slowed, so did I. they went, I excelerated as nothing there, and then suddenly the blooming pheasant was there and hit my Rad :( only broke the plastic casing, but shook me up for the remaining 60 odd mniles I had to drive. If I had hit a dog, I dont think I would have been able to drive any further.  I would have had to stop, and either sort the dog out or spend hours looking for it :(

Mum hyit a cat years ago., She made my dad go back with her to find it(it was a busy road and there was no way she could have stopped at the time) So all 5 of us got in the car and went looking for the cat. Never did find it.

I witnessed a similar thing a few months back.  I saw what I thought was a cat on the other side of the road, further down on the common against a hedge.  I walked my 3 down a side road as I was anyway, a few seconds later I heard a "tinkling" sound, I turned round to see a small dog get knocked flying by a car as he ran in front of it.  I had 3 dogs with me, the guy stopped but was very upset.  He held my dogs while I checked the dog that was hit, he was dead.  As luck would have it a friend turned up, a veterinary nurse who put the dog on the side of the road.  A little brown and white Jack Russell, with a collar, tele number and his name was "Eddie".  She rang the number who didn't have any transport, was in the pub and didn't know when she could get there!!  We waited an hour with no sign, another phone call left them saying they would definately fetch him as soon as they could.  We put him behind a tree.

One thing that sticks with me is a Fox that was close by.  My dogs got wind of it first, the whole time we were there, he paced around, surveying the situation, he sat on walls outside nearby houses, just waiting.  3 People and 3 dogs that were gunning for him did not deter him.
He was however scared off by another person walking past him, I didn't see him again.

We left the dog and I went back about an hour later, he had gone. I am sure he was taken by his owners as there was a small blanket close by.  I can still hear the thud and then the yelp from that dog.

didn't have a good nites sleep, sir was allowed on the bed for lots of cuddles.

i kept going over it thinking should i have tried to grab the dog but by the time i got mine out of the way he was too far too reach and just plodded back into the road. :-(

other half thinks the owners are friends of his work colleague so he will try and find out if the dog is okay.

at the point of impact i turned away and closed by eyes, couldnt watch.  from where the car was to where the dog reappeared it must have got thrown a fair distance.
just hope the fact it ran home is a good sign.

tonite think i will walk a different route.

Also in the UK you MUST report hitting a dog in a car to the police.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 21.01.04 10:32 UTC
I know that was the law when dogs were licensed, tohme (which is why you've never had to report running over a cat :( ), but is it still true now? I would hope so, but I thought I read it was no longer the case.
- By tohme Date 21.01.04 10:33 UTC
It is still the law.

Hi tohme

yes in the UK, driver reporting it.

Gave my details to the driver and the dog owner.

Found out from other half's work colleague dog rushed of to an orthopedic (sp) hospital in blyth, has a bad fracture on its leg which might have to be removed :-(  at least the dog is alive.

Unfortunately I also know how it feels to hit a dog. I was driving to work one morning along a coastal road and this dog just ran out in front of me. I couldnt do anything about it as there was an oncoming car and I would have hit it head on had I swerved, I slammed my breaks and on and half closed my eyes. The feeling is awful knowing the inevitable and i felt sick when it happened, as I could hear the dog cry as I hit it. It was absolutely awful and I was in a right state, I pulled over on the side of the road and the owners came up to me and apologised saying they should have had the dog on a lead however it didnt stop me feeling terrible.

The dog was absolutely fine, went charging off back down to the beach after his ball. They took him to the vets who said he just had a bruised leg and he just needed rest. The owners were really nice about it and phoned me at work to make sure I was ok and said I could visit the dog if I wanted to. I was so glad he was ok and that evening had several large drinks :-D

What an awful feeling it must be :(
I remember seein a cat hit once on the opposite side of a dual carriageway - I cried all the way home .
I did run a squirrel over once and felt horrible. It ran out into the middle of the road and just stopped . I slammed on and waited for it to move but it didnt . So thinking it had "froze" I moved off really slowly around it just as it decided to go . I felt really yuk ... :(

I once had a pony hit my van in the early morning The poor thing died & the owner tried to claim from my insurance blaming me for chasing the pony. it came head on to me with a horse in front of it, I hit the brakes & stopping soon as I saw the horse which missed me by inches but the pony's head hit my windshield & door pillar(showing I couldn't have been chasing the pony). there were witnesses but the owners even took me to court for damages for their children's distress at losing their pony. Turned out they are horse dealers & lost their case & got no money at all from the incident

It was 16 years ago but I still cannot drive on that part of the road at night on my own

My dads dalmation got hit by a car last week, (he was fine) but the driver was awfully rude to my step mum.
The do slipped his lead and ran across the road, my step mum called him back and as she did realised that it was stupid and that she should have crossed over first but he came bounding back as a car came round the corner. My step mum is convinced that the driver could have stopped if they really wanted to but didnt and hit the dog. The driver then jumped out of the car calling my step mum a dirty sl***er and that the dog should be shot for not being under control.

My 5 year old brother witnessed all of this. They have only had him a couple of weeks, he is a 2 year old rescue dog. Anyway that evening my dad went out and bought a better collar and made sure that it was fitted propaly so hopefully no more accidents.

It is always horrible when people resort to bad language however, I expect the driver was just as shocked and scared as your step mother and vented it in the way that came most naturally to him.  So don't be too hard on his reactions as, unless you have been in the same position yourself, you do not know how you would behave :)

At least your dog is ok. :)
