Topic Dog Boards / General / Which Nail Clippers
- By annieee [gb] Date 21.01.04 19:00 UTC
Hi
I have done a search honest! I found loads of old posts which were very informative. I'm sure this question has been asked before so apologies :D
Can anyone tell me the best toe nail clippers and also if they are available online.
Thanks Champdoggers - what would I do without you all :)

Annieee, I like the guillotine ones myself, but everyone will have their favourtites. You can buy online from Here.  It is worth buying the more expensive ones they do two different sizes and they are strong with good blades.  You can also buy replacement blades for them.

Hope this helps

I prefer them too.

Ditto, they slice the nail rather than squeeze them, so its less uncomfortable for the dog

Dizzy, what is a dremmel, I've heard them mentioned a few times, do the dogs prefer it/them?

High Dizzy where can i get a Dremmel???? thanks
- By dizzy [gb] Date 21.01.04 23:31 UTC
argos and hardware stores have them---but get the rechargable ones-then your free to do it wherever you feel most comfortable---if you put dremmel in search someone provided a link that showed you how to use them ------theyre really good once everyones used to them/

Hi Dizzy,
I ordered a Dremel before I realised you could get a cordless. Should I change it or will I be OK with the one with a cord? I've never used one before and I didn't want to spend too much money as I'm not sure if Lola will let me do it. She's a bit nervous when I do her nails and I wondered if the noise would send her off on one :D I can understand her reluctance as I cut off too much the other day and we had blood everywhere :(

Hi Annieeee,
I don't have a cordless Dremel (or Dremel-lookalike) but a mains one, and it's fine. Yes, I have to do the dogs' nails by a powerpoint (usually in the kitchen), but it stops me doing it when other people want to watch TV! I got them used to it by first stroking their feet with it (unplugged) so they didn't mind it near their feet, then I'd hold them and turn it on (but not touching their feet) and treating, then after a couple of days they were happy to let me have a short 'proper go'! It's much easier than clipping. Good luck.
:)

Hi there

I looked into buying a dremmel to do my girls toes. Whilst out looking in the power tools section of some DIY stores I came across a cheaper version which I found to be fab. The version I have has a long attachment on it which keeps the noisy part which is on a stand a wee bit further away from the dogs. The attachment is just like holding a pencil which I find makes it easier. My oldest dog who was always terrified of having her nails done now sits quite happily having her manicure done :).

Hi...

I use a guillotine - works for me. Find it easier to take just the right amount - a little at a time. I was nervous when I started having a dog with black claws and no way to see the quick, and found through nervousness could squeeze the paw too much with my steadying hand... firm but steady works and after a few times my dog [now 8 months old and an energetic Cairn] just lies there and lets me do it no problem.

DREMEL - How, why and a STEP BY STEP guide to using a Dremel link is below. I intended to go dremel way before I mastered the clippers, may still go down that route at some point. Personally I would go for a cordless simply because you aren't restricted to where you do the clipping making it a bit more convenient.

I originally searched high and low for this link... if there is a better guide would like to hear of it as I still may take this route at some point.

DREMEL

[hope I did the link thing ok heh]

Regards Dave

There are now various dremel type tools around but I think that like vacuum cleaners and hoovers the names will always be interchangeable amongst doggy people.
