I have a 7 month old little girl who for the most part is a dream to get along with.  (albeit that we are stepping in to the teenage years, but so far it has been not to bad.  She is actually listening a bit better than she was before)  Anyway, after Christmas my BF brought his parents 10 year old Springer Spaniel to live with us for two months while his parents go down the states.  Kirra, (my puppy) has adapted very well to having Copper (the Springer) in the house.  I think she even enjoys having a playmate and she has picked up a few good habits from him.

My question though is that just recently she started licking his chops and picking his teeth with her tounge.   Usually Copper will let her for quite some time.  If he has had enough than he will let out a low growl and she will quit...for about 10 sec.   Is this normal, or should I be doing something about it?

Don't worry Drai, your youngster is submissing to him, a good sign as he is the 'visitor', she has obviously accepted he is top dog.  He is just letting her know when he has had enough, he might have a snap if she doesn't take the hint, but it is unusual for an older dog to do damage to a pup.

Hopefully he is neutered as she could come into season at anytime.  Just a thought.

He is neutered and she has been spayed.   Also she has just started trying to "hump" him.  This is new as well.  Could that be because her hormones are going nuts cause it is about that time?

I would think it could be something to do with her hormones, she was spayed quite early and I think that can have an effect with a pup not fully maturing. Although lots of pups go through the humping stage.

Hopefully someone else can come along with some info on that one.

I read somewhere that young wolves lick adult wolves muzzles to get them to regurgitate food.  This habit is obviously not required in pet dogs as they get fed by owners but the habit has not been eradicated.  Your young pup is showing she recognises the adult dog as more senior to her, even in her own home, and is displaying submissive behaviour to seek acceptance from the adult dog.
