Can anyone tell me what should be on the dogs tags in the eyes of the law. I know it is law that all dogs wear id tags, but tonight at dog training we were told it now has to be our name not the dogs and postcode and not telephone number??? I know some don't like to put the dogs name on the tag, but I don't mind that so thought the dogs name and my telephone number was ok but apparently not. Is this correct? Does it now have to be owners name and postcode?

I believe yes that's right the engraver told me that (unsure if it really is law but) it has to have your name, dogs name and address or phone number.
I never knew about it though till he said.

Found this...
The Control of Dogs Order 1992 states that "every dog, while in a highway or place of public resort, must wear a collar with the name and address of its owner inscribed on it or on a plate or badge attached to it".
I guess the dogs name is optional :)

I am sorry, but there is no way I would put my address on the tag, for reasons I am not going to go into.
I think It is perfectly sufficioent to put your surname and phone number. So I have got Ward and ont the other side my mobile number, So, if either of my dogs go missing, I will be at the end of the phone 24/7 till they are found. Also Beano is Microchipped so added insurance.
Why put your address????? And dogs name????????. Address can be used unpleasantly. And , you put your dogs name on the tag, all somone has to do to steal the dog is look at the coller and then call the dog. Daftest idea I have ever heard!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel your surname and number you can be contacted on 24/7 is enough.
And if it is the law to put the dogs name and address(i know that was an and or) on the tag, I would fight the authoroties tooth and nail.

I personally have my dogs name and my phone number on one tag and "scan me please" on another tag.
The infomation above was obtained from the KC website so i guess it is law to have your name and address.

I dont disagree with you mygirl(posted my response at the same time as you posted yours I think) but doesnt it sound strange putting your dogs name and address on a tag????????????
Seems completely daft to me. Wouldnt it me more sensible to have even just a contact number that the owner can be got on all the time??????????
And talking of please scan me discsa, I still havnt put Beanos on his, but he has been under the weather since he had it done, during his op bless him last tues. Will do it tommorow.

I just don't know Lea? I only got her 'scan me' tag last week after someone mentioned it here and it was only chatting to the engraver that i found that out about the name and address.
Any extra info on the dog in IMO would only be a benefit (not it's name though) as round here the local dog warden apparently doesn't have the resources to afford a scanner.
So it makes you wonder if you lost your dog in another county and with only a home number when obviously you are out would it suffice?
I suppose you just have to go with what's best for you, i hardly think we are going to be arrested for neglecting to provide our address on a tag :D
P.s the way our dog's going she's going to be 'blinging' roflmao with my name, her name, address, home phone, mobile, neighbours incase of emergency etc :D

My dogs have a tag with my surname, my 'phone no. on and a pet search tag with the petsearch details on that and a microchip tag as well.
If I don't get my dog back if it goes missing I damn well want to know why.

Hi Ebony,
Officially it has to be owner's surname and full address. Postcode is not sufficient instead of the full address. Telephone numbers and pet's name are optional extras. HTH. :)

I would never give my address as this would just enable them to know where to go for any further 'thefts', if this was the case. I feel that surname, 'phone no. is enough. especially (sp?) if there is also a micrchip tag or a petsearch tag.
If anyone came by a dog and they were concerned they would contact all the relevant organisations to find out if it were a 'lost dog' anyway.
If all people were animal lovers!!!
RIGHT!!!

I have dogs name, house no. and postcode and telephone number.Plus she is micro-chipped.I feel this way at least if she 'escaped' we would stand a reasonable chance of getting her back! this was done by choice, not because we had researched the right or wrong way to do it.
:)
If some of you are unhappy to put your own address why not use that of your vet? just a thought.

Personally I would never put the dogs name on because this way if the dog is stolen the will know his name. Also I would never have my full address on it for reasons.
What I do is surname, house number, postcoade (which will give the address if worked out) and on the other side telefone number.

All mine have 1 microchip tag and another with our telephone number on one side and postcode and on the other my vets telephone number. At least if one went missing and was found injured they would be able to contact my vets straight away.

Ok Look at it this way and this is what happened to me the other week.
You find dog wandering around in the street, it has no form of identification on it and you are in an area you are unfamiliar with. The vet, police, dog warden etc are not open/available; what do you do with the dog? The phone number is engaged (someone is on the internet for 4 hours)
If it had the address on you could go round immiediately and reunite the two; otherwise what do you do with the dog?

My dogs have two tags
tag one: 'please scan me i have a microchip' and moblile and house phone numbers.
tag two: my name, house number and postcode as requested from dog trainer.
I refuse to put my address in full on incase someone sees my dog looks at tags and spots address this person could be a burglar and then case you house until you are not in, then bingo your house is robbed.
Cordelia

Mine have 2 tags - one with my surname, address and phone number on one side, and the vet's phone number on the other, and one with the Tattoo Register phone number.
On the couple of occasions when I have found a wandering dog with his address on his tag I have taken him straight home - just a postcode is no help. A phone number is all very well, but if the frantic owner is busy phoning police/dog warden/ vets/ kennels etc then how do you get through to tell them their dog is safe?

IMHO having your address on a dog doesn't constitute a visit from thieves! :) Only this morning i gave my address to get a refund at Asda so how do i know the man at customer service wasn't going to rob my house, i was shopping so it was easy to deduce that i wasn't in.
I know of a taxi driver round here charged with breaking into houses, he would call his mates when he picked up anyone that looked like they had money and they robbed the house.
The chances of you losing your purse with personal details in would probably be higher than losing your dog. :D (Well in my case)

Thankyou for all the replys, I guess I will have to get another tag this week with my name and postcode on to go with her origional one with her name and our telephone number on and her id chip tag. As we live on an Island I have brought her a talking collar for when we go to the mainland which records any information I want on the collar and I can change the phone number etc to the local one where I am staying found that very useful. but a little bulky for everyday use (well at the moment anyway when she is only half grown lol).
