Topic Other Boards / Foo / know any campsites in scotland?
- By Smudgley [gb] Date 17.01.04 10:37 UTC
We've decided to go to Scotland for 2/3 weeks in the summer. We currently have a trailer tent, but hope to have bought a caravan by the time we go.
I've been looking on the net for campsites, but the only ones I've come across are £15 - £20 per night!
We do a lot of camping & this seems expensive to me!
Anyone know any good sites?
Must accept dogs & must have a childrens play area. & electric hook up. that's all we need. :)
Having only ever been to Scotland before on business & never been there for a holiday, I'd also welcome any info on good places to visit/stay.

What area will you be looking to travel to

Jean, we're not sure yet what area to go to.
We thought about travelling to the borders & spending 1 or 2 nights there, then travelling further up & maybe staying in a few different places. We don't want to do too much travelling in one day as we'll have our 2 children (they'll be 6 & 7 by then) with us. - we're from the Midlands.
Would like to see some of the nice sights & walks, but to be honest, we're easily pleased & are just looking forward to having a good holiday.
I've heard that the further north you go, the better it is.

Any suggestions?

We have a static caravan on a site called Crosslaw in  Coldingham just north of Berwick up the a1 it has a new area for tents and caravans new shower block etc childrens play area a bit limited only swing & slide & a climbing frame it is a nice base to access the border area & some of the east coast No problems with your dogs prices start from around ten pound a night Unsure what the position is about kids in the club think there is a time limit. You will need to book
A nother site is called Scoutscroft in Coldingham

thanks very much Jean, I'll look into the sites.
We like a play area, so the kids can keep themselves occupied while we're setting up etc. So a swing & slide is fine.  :)

We stayed one year ( 2002) on August Bank Holiday, it was quiet and peaceful.  Nice walks, play area for the kids and a great restaurant too.

I'd recomend Faskally Caravan Site (2 miles away from Pitlochry).

We went to a place near dunbar C&C club site. about £12 a night (but can check if you want, and that was for tents) lovely place about 2 mins off the A1 and 20 mins from Edingborough. Just make sure you ask for a pitch near the tiolet block. too far away when you asre in the last feild(10 min walk!!!!!!).

We regularly camp at Dornoch (maybe a bit further north than you were planning?), the mutts are welcome, the campsite is right on the beach (practically!) and we pay less than £10 a night. We don't have kids, but there is a bit with, er, swings and such (looks like a mini brightly coloured construction site! We never had stuff like that when we were kids!!). Will definately be going there again this year, we met a lady with a lovely blue Dane on the beach one time, Minx fell in love and tried to elope with him. Aw, bless. So if you fancy that far north, its definately worth a look!

Hi, there's one in Edinburgh, just down the road from me at Silverknowes - takes vans and tents.  Couldn't say how much it is but it's on the caravan club website.  Lovely walks down there and of course, Edinburgh's a gorgeous city.  Also there's a caravan park at Seton Sands in East Lothian, takes tents as well I think.  My mum lives there (not in the caravan park!) and its' a fab area, regular buses into Edinburgh and the whole of the coastline to explore.  If you're going to that area e-mail me and I'll let you know some hidden secrets of fabulous places to visit off the beaten track.  Hope you have a great holiday!

Thankyou so much to everyone who's replied (keep 'em coming). I've checked out most of the ones you've suggested - still got a couple to check out. There are some really lovely sites you've mentioned & we're very interested in them.
problem is they're all so nice, want to go to them all.  :)

Hi, I've also been to Beecraigs as mentioned by another, fantastic, you could go for a walk every day on a different route, all within the campsite, its massive, dogs love it. theres also a fantastic chip shop in nearby linlithgow. I've been there twice last year and will definately be going back this year and as far as I remember its not expensive, approx £10 per night for 2 adults, 2 children and one poochy. theres a huge play area for the kids, deer farm, fish farm, huge loch for fishing, you won't be bored.

Try CASTLE BAY CARAVAN PARK in Portpatrick on the South West coast.....I lived there for 3 years and it is truly beautiful.Very child and dog friendly and if you watched 2000 ACRES OF SKY with Michelle Collins last year, a lot of the series was shot there. The walks are fantastic.

Ukcampsite.co.uk  is very good. Loads of reviews.

We bought our first caravan last year and went to a few plays from info we got on the site.

I live is Scotland and my prefered places are around Pitlochry, Perthshire.  Some outstanding areas around there. I prefer slightly northern areas.

My Browser is playing up so will try and did out some links and forward later.
