Hi

For the last week my 16 week old Shih tzu has started to duck her whole head in her water bowl.  I havent a clue what she is doing it for, its not just her face but her whole head.  Has anyone had this sort of problem before?  I personaly havent seen this before and wondered what your thoughts are.  Thank you in advance

Hi Eddie, it may be a problem to you but I would not mind betting it is fun to her. Don't know the breed so it could be something else do her eyes and ears seem clean and ok, and is her demeanour happy when she does it, if so I guess it is a new game.

Hi Eddie
Yes I have exactly the same - but my pup is a GSD (now 13 months old). She did this from a very young age, and earned the nickname 'our submersible pup' :D she does it still! Everyone has got quite used to China having a wet face!
She also dunks many of her toys in her water bowl, the pond etc and then brings them in sopping (and I do mean sopping) wet, and shakes them so that the water goes everywhere. She loves the water so much she has her own paddling pool in the summer and loves it. The down side is that I had to stop having a water bowl indoors. I now have two buckets of water in the 'courtyard' which they have free access to via a dog door!

It's one of her little quirks, and something I love her for, even though it can be messy :D

Sounds to me as if she has found a lovely new game to wind you up with :-D One of my older boys does this but he normally drops his ball in there first and then fishes it out whilst blowing bubbles.

You wait till she starts experimenting further and digging in the water bowl like my two 20 week olds are now.  Talk about a flood!!!

I have resorted to standing the water bowl on layers of newspaper as it soaks up the splashes, mind I do have to clear it up at least three times a day and soggy newspaper is not a joke :-D

Must tell you that before Solomon became The Sod he was Solli Walli Wet Legs not because he was incontinent but from his habit of stirring up the drinking water first with one front leg and then with the other.

Im pleased she finds it funny :-) she even then has the nerve to slide over the tiled kitchen floor in the pools of water she has created lol :-)

She'll not find it funny when you slip and sit on her, take care, little tart.

I have a big old beach towel under Glazby's food and water bowls to help soak up the water, it works better than newspaper and I don't have to change is quite so often!!

I now stand the waterbowl in a washing-up bowl to catch most of the water from those that like to submerse their faces whilst drinking

I bought one of those metal stands for mine.....that stopped it straightaway. Although I only had a problem with the feet and digging, not sure about the face.

ROFL - Just read this after mailing you. At least you wont have to wash her face every day then :) :) :)

Hi Eddie,
Mine play with the water. All five heads in a big bowl, there's more water on the floor.
If it's not on the floor it's coming off the Mastiff's jowls, then they wipe it on your knee. YUK!!!
I have to buy a new mop every couple of weeks. I've changed the carpet in the kitchen twice, tried lino (they ate it), going to try tiles next. Any suggestions??
D4wn

P.S.
Get the 'phone number for Amirene asap. Mail you with it when my daughter comes home.

Tiles are definitely easier but turn the floor into a skating rink. You're lucky the mastiffs only wipe it on your knee, my weim's favourite greeting is to ram his head into people's crotches and then you look as though you've wet yourself!

My GSD pup loves dunking and diving for Ice cubes. Done the Ice cube bit in summer she kept watching us put ice in our drinks so we put ice in her but didn't think to put it outside so my hallway was swimming as she got soaked so from there on we popped her in the garden so that she could roll in it fish in it and dunk her head she loved it. I have to say though thay since that day the water it is not on the floor but on a stand as given the chance will ly in it with her feet in the bowl. She also loves puddles especially muddy ones and often lays in them to drink :-D
