I have two dogs that I want to breed a litter from. Yesterday, they mated for the first time. My male mounted my female and thrust for about ten miniutes. The female screamed, but they were stuck rump to rump. The male seemed to be enjoying himself quite a lot. My female was less than thrilled. They ahve mated 17 times in three days. How many times should I let them mate?

I think that is about 15 times too many! I really think you should have found out a few more details about breeding before embarking on it!

John :(

Excuse me - can you explain your maths? You say <<Yesterday they mated for the first time.>> <<They have mated 17 times in three days.>> How does time work on your planet?
- By Smudgley [gb] Date 17.01.04 22:55 UTC
LOL.. well spotted JG.

I'd love to meet the stud that can mate a bitch 17 times in a day.

Is this breeding or soft porn - makes me cringe :(
- By pauliedee [gb] Date 18.01.04 09:35 UTC
he he! i think this person is having a joke!! ;-)
- By PoundPuppy [us] Date 18.01.04 17:38 UTC
NO, I am seroius. They have literally mated 17 times. This si not a joke or soft porn. I really want some advice here.
- By carolyn Date 18.01.04 17:46 UTC
No more mating them then, poor dog will be off his legs :-)
Keep a diary of dates mated and be prepared in advance.
Normally bitches are mated twice maybe 3 times but certainly not 17 :-0

Then separate them now!!!!

If they have already mated and tied for that amount of times, you are now risking injury to your dog if not your bitch. Did you hold both dogs steady when they were tied, if not then is is possibly why your bitch screamed, it hurt her, she probably was trying to pull away.

I personally have had a dog so badly injured by a bitch pulling away when tied, that he was never able to mate another bitch.

At the most we have mated a bitch 3 times, and if that does not result in puppies we do the same at the next season.

How old is your bitch and how old is your dog?  If your bitch is to young to be bred from i.e. under 18 months old then you still have time to get her to your vet and have her injected to stop puppies.

I would go out immediately and get the book "The book of the bitch", because if your knowledge of animals is this poor you need to get some reading done now.  Contact the breeders of both your dog and your bitch and ask them to help you with the possible forthcoming whelping.

Continue to come on this board and ask for advice, and hopefully you will increase your knowledge.

Regards

Jayne

If they really have mated & tied 17 times, then it would be totally pointless doing any more matings now on any other days this season as his semen will have been wasted & will be of pretty poor quality now.
- By Smudgley [gb] Date 18.01.04 18:18 UTC
poundpuppy, can I just ask why you let them mate 17 times?
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 18.01.04 18:25 UTC
Don't think poundpuppy (unfortunate name but I guess now the pup weighed a pound or is from a pound and that it has nothing to do with £) realised that mating should be supervised and controlled. Still we are now able to help so when we know the age of this couple of dogs and the breed perhaps we will be able to help poundpuppy through the whelping period. So come back PP and let us know more about this pair.

They are both German Shepherds. I have never bred dogs in my life, and I don't exactly know what I am doing. The female is one year old and the male is seven years old. My female weighs 40 pounds and my male weighs 98 pounds. The female has a champion title and the male has several herding titles. I ahve seperated them now. I hae the female in a crate an dthe male loose. My male is trying despretly to get at my female and is humping at the cage. I am sorry if I gave the impression of porn or a joke on my first post, I never ment to. I am just so new at this and I don't have a clue what I am doing. I want the best for m dogs and appreciate any and all help from you guys.

If your female is only a year old, then book an appointment at your Vets for tomorrow and get a misalliance injection.

She is far far to young for that breed to even consider whelping a litter from her. She will no way be ready mentally to give birth and rear a litter.

She needs to have her hips scored and be checked for all other relevant health issues as does your dog before you mate them again.  There are a number of GSD experts on this forum who I am sure will be able to give you more advice on what tests need to be done when they read your post.

Please take this in the right way I am only think of the health of your bitch.

If it is causing your dog distress by her being in close proximity now he has mated her, then book him into kennels for the next week.  This will give both them and you some much needed breathing space.

Edited to say: If you have the injection for your bitch please be aware that she will come back into season, so you will have to make arrangements remove you boy for at least the next three weeks

Do you mean your bitch is a champion at a year old ??? Possible but highly unlikely in GSD's

Yes, she is a champion. I show her every weekend and I started when she was 6 months. She has shown in several countries and has taken BIS nearly every time. She should be a winner. I bought her from an American breeder for $5,000. I will think about giving her the injection. Will it hurt her? Are there any risks involved? I got my neighbor to take the male for a week. He was getting out of hand. Thanks for all of your help!
- By ice_queen Date 18.01.04 19:07 UTC
The injection wont hurt her.  Its just like a yearly jab.  The main drawback is her season will start again but that is what is supposed to happen and how it works

Rox

PS what titals does she have? and in which countries?

Hi PP - welcome ot the forum. This is the best place to be at a time like this for advice :)

Good luck and keep us posted
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 18.01.04 19:03 UTC
Thanks for letting us know the situation, your girl is too young to have a litter she is still at least a year of being fully grown herself. The best you could do for her now is take her to the vet tomorrow and have the whelp ended. She could go to term and have a litter of fit pups but things could go very wrong and you would regret your actions.

How ever if you decide to continue with this you will need a good deal of help so continue to keep us informed, we can't tell you what to do but only advise what we think is best for you and your bitch.
- By archer [gb] Date 18.01.04 19:08 UTC
Pound puppy are you in the UK since I don't know of any BIS GSD bitches at All breed champ shows in the last couple of years

I will have the whelp ended. I never knew she was too young. Thanks for the advice.
- By Lady Dazzle [gb] Date 18.01.04 19:11 UTC
You are very welcome.

I am just so pleased that you decided to ask our advice.

There are a few risk involved with the injection, but your vet can give you this information.  But those risks are slight compared to letting her have a litter so early.

I bet things are quieter now your boy has been farmed out for a while :-D

Best of luck, keep in touch and let us know how things go.

PP, if you are in the USA, which is what I am beginning to think, she needs to be 2 years old before you can have her hip scored and you need to do that before breeding her. People who buy her pups will have a right to expect the you the owner of a champion will have taken care to breed her to a dog who is also a good specimen and has been hip scored and any other tests that are done by good breeders in your country.

Let us know how things go with her and ask your neighbour to take the dog for the next 3 weeks.
- By PoundPuppy [us] Date 18.01.04 19:37 UTC
Yes, I am in the USA. I will get both of them hip scored before I ever breed them agian. I plan to call the vet today and ask about the risks involved with the injection. My neighbor says she will keep the dog as long as I need her to. I am so very thankful to all of you for your advice and support.

Pound Puppy it has and is a pleasure talking to you, guess everyone is pleased you have come to the conclusion you have and that you have such a good neighbour to help you. Hope you have many more happy days showing your bitch and when the time is right you have a lovely litter, some of which will go on to get to be made up to champions too.
- By Lady Dazzle [gb] Date 18.01.04 20:03 UTC
I agree with Jackie you come across as a very caring person and it has been a pleasure helping you.  We all make mistakes sometimes and it takes a big person to admit it.  I congratulate you.

I hope that your bitch goes on eventually to produce you a lovely litter.

Just because your dilemma has been sorted out please don't leave it at that, there is so much more to learn just by lurking on this forum and we would love to hear from you again.
