Topic Dog Boards / Health / Dentistry question!
- By Jo19 [gb] Date 10.01.04 14:26 UTC
Took Cam to the vet's today for his 'youth check', where he has a general check up with the nurse. She advised that because he still has two of his milk teeth (and he's nearly 10 months), he will have to have these surgically removed - either under sedation, or anesthetic.  I have concerns about this, for the obvious reasons. Is this normal practice?

Thanks

Jo

Yes, if the permanent teeth are through and the milk are still firm then the permanent teeth could be pushed into the wrong place and cause damage to other tissues in the mouth or rub against the opposing teeth and damage them. If there is movement in the milk teeth you may be able to wiggle them out or a good bone may help but out they should come and ASAP.

Retention of the canine teeth is common in toy dogs especially Yorkies and it can cause bad teeth and the removal of permanent teeth.

Yes it's normal practice. My bitch had to have one retained upper canine milk tooth removed, and her son had to have both done - so there could be a hereditary tendency. If they are left then the adult teeth can easily grow in the wrong place and cause quite serious problems - holes in the palate etc. Get the retained ones removed.

Hi Bev, lovely to hear from you! Hope you had a good Christmas and new year. Cam is a huuuge monster now - 38kg.  He's doing really well, and still the apple of my eye. :)  Would be great to meet up again - we could always take the dogs for a walk together sometime. Stay in touch!

Btw, hope Taz's coat is better.

Hi Jo,
Had a good Christmas, can't remember New Year, had a party but by all accounts it was a good un:)  Taz's coat is brilliant now thanks for asking, took a while but we got there.  Ive entered her at Crufts now, so i'll let you know how we do, hope to see you before then though, she's just finished her first season so she is back in circulation.  Would be great to meet up for a walk.  Let me know when you have some spare time.

Hi Jo

Have you tried those cotton tuggers - they are brilliant for getting milk teeth out and a lot cheaper than the vets - play tug of war or soak it in water you have cooked liver in, tie it to an immovable object and let him play with it :D :D

<<tie it to an immovable object>> Oh! you have met my husband then Christine :D

Good tip, thanks Kerioak. The vet has said I can wait another 6 weeks - if it ain't out by then, he needs the op!

Jaffa - am I right in thinking you've qualified for Crufts???????????????!!!!!  Pray tell!!!!!

I see from another post that you may be getting another dobe. Oh, don't keep us in suspense - what's the story?!

Sundays are usually good for me for walkies, any time other than mornings. :D

Have a good one

Jo

Btw, my email is down at the moment :(

Hi Jo
when i read your post i was thinking the same thing . Ebony had 1 baby canine at that time but the adult one had grown in front of it,my vet said if it was still there at 12 months they would take it out but low and behold she was playing tug with Zak last monday and i noticed some blood in her mouth,on closer inspection her tooth had come out .

Thanks for the info about sundays and mornings ,I will make it sunday afternoon when we get together .

Hi Jo,
Yes Taz qualified for Crufts.  Ive entered her in Graduate bitch, the breeder will be handling her for me.  Can't wait, we're all really excited.  I'm also getting another dobe, from the same breeder, can't decide yet wether to get a dog or another bitch, I am so tempted to get a dog, although i've never owned one before, always had bitches, but Taz's dad is so fantastic, I fell in love with him.  Owen's not so sure, he wants another bitch, he thinks that dogs lift their legs around the house, I know some do, but I'm trying to persuade him ours wont, I hope, but I want a black and tan this time.  It really depends on the litter produced, obviously it hasn't happened yet, fingers crossed everything will be ok, I'll let you know.  Sundays are good for me too, afternoons are better for the same reason i guess.  Look forward to hearing from you.

I will be at crufts ,only as a visitor though ,I will have my CD badge on and my hair will be in loads of plaits if you see me would you say Hi .I have been lucky with Zak he lifted his leg on the sofa once and never bothered again yet Ebonys dad will do it anywhere.
When i saw EBONYS litter i couldnt make my mind up ,First i wanted a girl, then a boy, then a girl my breeder told me not to get a boy as it would fight with the male ive got and getting a girl would be the best solution. It was in the end as Zak is neutered and when Ebony came into season i didnt have the worry of parting them .

Hi Anniee
Yes thats him, he's gorgeous.  He stayed with us when our breeders brought him up for a local show.  He slept with Taz in the utility they got on famously, she was absolutely besotted with him, as we all were, he was just brilliant.  I would love to meet you at Crufts i'll e-mail you nearer the time to let you know where we are benched, you must come and say hello.

Hi Bev
Id love to chat at Crufts. I first saw Malcolm when he got the ticket at the South Eastern Dobe Show last year. I've emailed you on another matter. How did Taz get on with her first season? Lola is a bit moody but not as bad as I had feared. When will I be totally sure it's safe to take her out?
:) annieee :)

Hi Annie
Got your e-mail, ive replied to it.  Taz came into season on Christmas Eve, she was over 11 months old so later than I was expecting, but no problems at all.  Didn't notice any difference in her whatsoever, not too much blood either, restricted her to the kitchen and utility but we took her out every day into the woods nearby, hardly ever see anyone as its off the beaten track, so felt we were quite safe, and it was fine.  I'm not sure when it's 'safe' to take her out where you will come across other dogs, I must admit I'm not sure I would dare, i'd be too worried a dog got to her, even on the lead.

Hi people - taken me ages to reply because computer's been down all weekend. Grr!

So excited that Taz has qualified for Crufts - funny, I seem to remember someone saying they weren't interested in showing? :D  Will definitely try and make it on the dobe-day, to offer some support. You must be proud as hell of her!

Whatever you get Bev, bitch or dog, you must promise to let me meet him/her when he/she is a pup - they are so gorgeous at that age and Cam seems so grown up now I've forgotten what puppies are like. For the record, he's 10 months now, and we've taken him everywhere (pub, people's houses, bank, shops, taxis etc) and he has never lifted a leg inside.  He is a handful at times but only because he's full of beans and I feel compelled to be a one-woman-show-dobe-PR-merchant!

Just taken him to the pub again tonight (Number 22). He was really good - ate some crisps, tested the beer, slavered over a 'laydee' (he prefers girls) and did a couple of supremely smelly farts - fortunately the place wasn't too busy.  I really must get him entered for some shows ... he still needs to fill out a bit, but he loves any attention he gets and doesn't relax until he's been mauled by at least one 'fan'.

Looking forward to walking with you Bev and Ella ... tho I can't wait until we get some lighter evenings.

Stay in touch

Jo :)
