Hello can anyone tell me what is considered the best age to have a first litter from a Ebt

Not before she is 2 years of age. Three is probably ideal.

a minimum age of 1 year old, by law. if she's had her 2nd season by the time she's a year old, that should be ok, if not, wait until her 2nd season, some people say three, but its your choice. ;-)

By law? I didn't realise that

the dog breeding and welfare act states minimum age to mate bitch is 1 year. i wouldnt mate on first season unless bitch was at least 1 year old.

I think you'll find that only refers to licenced, commercial breeders. For the 'normal' breeder there is no such law. It is sensible to wait till a bitch is 2 years old before mating her.

Most people would not breed from a bitch puppy of a year, they would prefer to wait until the bitch is fully mature, that also allows time to do the nesseccary tests and to find out if she is a good example of the breed. So I recon not before the 3rd season and not after 3 1/2 years so some where in the middle is probably the ideal. We all have our own ideas but different bitches mature at different times but none as early as 12 months, at least not in the larger breeds.

I'm sure that Pauliedee must be right Melody - after all she registers her puppies with Dog Lovers as it's only half the price of the Kennel Club!!

Now now .....saucer of milk time?

Hi Guest. Do contact one of the Bull Terrier Clubs and find out as much about your chosen breed as you can. They will advise you about any particular problems in the breed and help you honestly assess if your bitch is of suitable quality to be bred from.
There is a wealth of knowledge and experience on this site, but as with all things internet, it's up to the reader to seperate the good advice from the rubbish posted by ignorant puppy producers, (as opposed to serious breeders comitted to their breed) and when you are learning about something new, it's not always easy to tell the difference between the two.
Take your time to learn and whether your girl is or isn't suitable to be bred from, enjoy her for the companion that you've chosen to live with.
