Hi there. Im deciding between these two makes of dog food Burns or Nature Diet. It is for my 12 week old pup. Thanks for any pointers!

Depends whether you want to feed wet or dry, but change over slowly what ever you choose. Also depends on what your dog likes best, and I'm not sure that ND is suitable for a puppy and I wish I had not started to reply to this really because as it will be clear to everyone I have not a clue what I am talking about may be the malt.
Better not let John hear you`ve got the malt out ;) ;)

As Jackie says it depends if you want to feed wet or dry.
Nature Diet comes in puppy too, I fed my pup Toesy on it till he was 6 months, then changed to all other varieties, I think he's done so well on it, that I wouldn't feed my new pup on anything else.

Burns will not supply large chains of petstores - try your local independant.

Burns is a vey good dry food, but still has cereal as the main ingredient. Naturediet is better in the respect it has NO additives at all and the main ingredient is meat. It will also depend on the size of dog you have, Burns would be more cost effective for a large breed.

It has rice as the main ingredient followed by the protien (meat or fish) and no water

Both Burns and ND will deliver direct. Haven't tried Burns delivery, but ND is very efficient as Jacki says
I think Burns is Burns.co.uk but a web search will find it.
Both are very good.

Both Burns and Naturediet are very similar they are rice based with meat and veggies. You can rear puppies on either; just depends whether you prefer to use a wet or dry food.

Don't know about Burns, but have heard good things on these boards about it. My 7 month old has thrived on naturediet, and there is a puppy variety, and number of choices for a more mature dog. I had it deleivered direct, arrived very quickly and easily and saved quite a bit of cash that way. Superb service and product.

[ps smells so nice when you open it have been tempted myself ;).]
My puppy is doing brilliantly on ND, I order it from Berriewood, cheapest I have found - cheaper than direct from ND, I wouldn't feed my dogs on anything else now

A few questions : do those who feed their dogs on nature diet feed on anything else too ?? im just thinking about the dogs teeth because surely wet food only cant be good over the long term. Also, does naturediet give the dogs bad breath like tinned food does ??
Does anyone know if nature diet have a website ?
Thanks
Claire :)

http://www.naturediet.co.uk/
I raw feed but I have some friends who feed this but they also give recreational bones for teeth cleaning; their breath does not appear to be rank like the tinned food fed dogs.

All the talk has made me interested in ND by I could not find on the site suggestions for feeding, lets say a 25kg dog per day, I note that each pack is 75% water so how many packs would you need to feed to get the amount of food needed, and what is the cost per pack.

It costs 57p for a 390 gm packet at PAH. Not sure what the amount is recommended for what size though!
Hi Jackie,
I have got a feeding guide somewhere, but looking at the packet just quickly, it says Small - half pack, Medium 1-2 packs, Large 2-3 packs. My dog weighs 27 kg, and he was having 2 packs a day. I didn't find this quite enough though, as he was losing a bit of weight, so depends on the dog's exercise, etc, as well.

Looks like it would cost me £7 to £8 a day a bit too much for me, may try it for the odd meal so I know what it is like if I'm asked.

I feed raw normally, but keep Nature Diet in for emergencies (like when my children can't be bothered to make up the dogs' dinners :D ). My two (dogs) are 18 and 21 kg and they get half a pack each (they are fed twice a day, so a pack each a day). It does work out about twice as expensive as raw, but it is a very good alternative. Downside, it is more bulky to store than dry food.

I was working on the 2 1/2 to three packs each per hound - but my maths was wrong it would be between 5 & 6 £ a day, still too much compared with Burns Venison & Rice. Does seem a lot when 75% is liquid, bit like tin food because of the water you have to feed so much.
Jackie
The feeding guide recommends 1000 grams a day for a 25 kilo dog, so at 390g per pack that would be approx 2.5 packs per day. However IMO they overestimate what a dog needs, one of my dogs should be on 2.7 packs, but she is fed 2 and is great on it. Dylan should be fed 3.3 packs, but as his exercise level is pretty low he is also on 2 packs a day and thriving well. As I said before, the cheapest supplier of ND I could find is Berriewood, and if I order over £100 worth (not difficult as I get my cat food from them too), I can get a pack of 18 for £6.46 + VAT, which works out 42pence a pack. Not too bad I think (oh and delivery is free too, although not sure where you are and if they deliver there) Also don't forget some of that 75% moisture will be meat juices etc

EDIT Just noticed you are in Lincs, they deliver free there too!

At 2 packs each a day and at 42p per pack that is still .84p per day which I agree is not too bad but compared with the most expensive burns (venison) it is far more than I am paying now, it works out at about .32p per dog per day and they deliver free too. Now they do have chews and treats too but think that would continue.
Decided that the only way to find out is to buy some in and see how it goes, the food seems on a par with the Burns the only thing is they would not be able to chew as they do now. I am happy with the Burns but (silly I know) would like to sometimes give them a change. Have to say my hounds have never been so well or so full of beans and I would recommend the Burns to anyone.

My dog's teeth have never been better since feeding Naturediet - must be the carrots. And their breath is luvverly.

I feed mostly NatureDiet and Nature's Menu which is very similar. My girl is just 21kg and she has 2 packs a day, one in the morning after her walk, and one in the evening for her dinner :D
She is very fit and loves her food. She also had the Puppy ND when a youngster. Great coat, good teeth etc.
I do feed her stuffed smoked bones and a few times a week, she gets tripe, sardines, and scrambled eggs.
