I have to confess I did have one of these wonderfuld dogs.  Unfortunately I gave her back to the breeder after 6 months.  We had, had her from 12wks old.  At the time my eldest was 5 and youngest nearly 2.  At the end of the day I was putting the dog before my kids.  They couldn't play because she was diving in the middle or stealing their toys.  If there was a problem when I was with her and the kids on the field I was torn between leaving my children to retrieve the dog etc.  We just didn't have the time for her.  It was the hardest decision ever to send her back but I still feel the right one.  These dogs need alot of time and training.  Don't get me wrong, she wasn't nasty or misbehaved.  She would do all the sit, stay. Just a bit too boisterous for a house with such young children.  Time has gone on and my kids are 4 and 8 both at school and I'm home all day.  I have got a puppy cavalier king charles spaniel now (complete opposite) but have been toying with getting a rescue weimaraner perhaps one that is 2 / 3 years old but feel hesitant as I'd want to be 100% sure of the dogs nature.  Getting another weimaraner puppy would be too painful.  I can burst into tears looking at the pictures of our last pup. We also have a new house with a huge garden now which our cavi is lost in.

Weimaraner Rescue take a deep interest in the dogs that come up for rehoming; no dog that has ever bitten is taken on.  Home checkers visit potential homes to vet environment and experience etc and all dogs are assessed so that the right home can be found for the right dog.  Dogs that need experienced homes are not rehoused unsuitably.   "Problem" dogs are rehomed only with those who have experience of the breed.

The vast majority of weimaraners in rescue are there as a result of relationship breakdowns or because people, like yourself, realise that it is not after all the breed for them at the moment.

In general I would say that a Weimaraner is NOT the best choice for those with a very young family; not because they are nasty but because when mature they DO need a lot of exercise and as I always point out, it is difficult taking babies/toddlers out in the pouring rain up hill and down dale when, unless you are committed, if you did not have a dog, you would probably stay in :D  Also they are very boisterous and do not mature until 3 and usually they do not slow down until just before they pop their clogs :D  I have never seen a "tired" weimaraner!

As you now have a cavvie puppy it may be best to wait until that was fully mature before thinking of taking on a weimi of any age; then you would need to consider whether the two would be compatible.

An HPRs exercise requirements are vastly different from a CKCS and may prove too much "dog" for your cavvie.

I work with weimaraner club of gb rescue and rehoming.  If you would like a chat please feel free to e mail me your phone number and I will ring you.  We do get weims that are used to being around young children and other dogs and we have around 25 to rehome at the moment.  You would be subject to a home check.  My e mail addy is:  kidmal.weimaraners@ntlworld.com

I am learning this lesson, the hard way, with our English Pointer pup.  My vet told me they are in the same class as the Weimaraner in the need for exercise.  My children are 9 and 5.  And, I have to drag them out for the dog runs when they are not in school because they are not old enough to be left alone at home.  I did not really realize I was looking at 2+ hours of exercise daily for our dog breed when I got her. (lesson learned:  high energy does not mean a daily walk)  We are trying to make the adjustment in lifestyles.  I thought I had a good size yard.  That was "pre-Sadie" days.  So, I now am driving her to fields and woods for off lead running daily.  But, then again, she lays on the couch with her head up on my lap, and those beautiful eyes the color of whiskey look up at you....
