After a few months of researching & looking for a Standard Schnauzer I got a pup six weeks ago. In the months of looking I emailed & phoned a few breeders asking for info and one of the breeders has recently got back to me asking if I was still looking. I explained that I have now got a pup and he wanted to know which breeder I bought from, after telling him I got a bitchy email back about he breeder I bought from! The breeder I got my lovely pup from has been breeding for 30yrs and the puppy's grandparents & parents are champions (not that I care), Also she made sure that I visited the pup twice before she even thought about me taking him home. Also he copied the email to another breeder! Sorry to moan! But this has really annoyed me! My partner & I are looking to get another pup next year, but this has put me off encase I buy from the wrong breeder or if I get bitchy emails again!!!

Have to say that whatever I am buying if the person selling tries to sell by running down someone elses product I would not buy. It could be disapointment if they had you down as a possible buyer but there is know excuse for being like that, they could have put doubts in your head about your pup and that is not fair.
Hi Jackie
I am sometimes asked to comment on fellow dobermann breeders and find it very difficult. The only thing I really feel I can do is say whether or not they do health testing (and publish the results if there is the option of them being kept confidential) and how often they breed.
With certain prolific breeders I am informed they don't give any back up or return phone calls from their "owners" when the owners feel they need help. Some of the dogs are transported miles from where they are bred and sold by other people. I also appreciate that it is generally the same questions over and over again but that is what breeders are there for - to help new owners, especially though the first year if they are novice owners. It is surprising how many find their way to me

Hi Chris
You have just purchased a 7 month old pup who had been shut in a shed on his own for months with a bad leg. This is not the sign of a good breeder, unless i've misread your previous post. You will find the schnauzer breaders all know each other and from my very limited experience have found most if not all have been very helpful , but regardless of there personal opinions they should be giving you all the support you need with your new pup .Please dont let your bad experience with the few taint your enjoyment of your little one .

The reason he was in the shed was to make him rest his leg and he was let out with the other Schnauzer during the day, but he did not get a lot of human or household appliance contact. I had him checked with the vet as soon as I got him home & the vet could not find anything wrong with him apart from when he stands his leg bows slightly (it is really hard to explain!) but I can't tell any difference. He was going to be used as a show dog, but they did not like that idea of him resting in the shed on his own anymore, that's why they sold him to us so he can be part of a family instead. (Sorry I should of put that in the posting) The breeder has been very helpful and has even offered us are money back if there are any problems! But I would never get rid of him, I have been diagnosed with a muscular dystrophy and my family would never get rid of me (I hope). Even though I am have trouble getting him to rest now. We left the room for about 2 minutes to come back & find him on top of the table??!?!

Sorry have I missed something, you said this breeder was a good breeder with 30 yrs experience etc etc yet it shut a 7 month old pup in a shed? I'm sorry but resting a leg is no excuse for shutting a puppy in a shed, it could quite easily have been put in an indoor crate with company. I don't think this is any way to treat a dog and wouldn't be a breeder I would buy pups from.

I did not say anything about them being a good breeder. Also I do not have much experience with breeders, but after I saw him I could not leave him there! At least now he is in a loving home where he can get the proper attention. I have had him 6 weeks now and the Vet has said that he is now fine.

Hi Chris
I would of taken him as well ,too soft.Hows he doing? lots of new experiences no doubt for both of you.Its very important as im sure your aware to get your pup out and socialise ,let him meet everyone and everything hes not too old to start training classes either where he'll get to meet lots of different dogs and you'll get additional support.Hes missed out on a very important development stage and hes about to enter adolescense which can be a "challenging " time .If you plan to get schnsuzer no2 in the future talk to the breed clubs .I have a std schnauzer shes 14 mths and is a very shrewed and imaginative charachter when she dosent get her own way, little monkey i'm sure she can read minds.

Thanx you for your message. He is the first dog I have owned and I never knew how rewarding it could be! I defiantly want another Schnauzer this time next year. But I think I will get a little girl from a small pup (we got my little boy when he was 5 month, as I never had a dog before I thought it was best not to get a young pup). We are trying to get him socialised now, but a trainer has told me he really needs to be neutered first, as he is trying to mount other dogs/people. Do you mind me asking was Breeder you bought from? So I know for next time.

Gina what about all the 'good' breeders who keep all their dogs in kennels. What's the difference?

It depends doesn't it, kennels that are insulated and warm and the dogs are well socialised and taken out for walks let out to play etc. That's fine. But if the dog has problems it obviously didn't get the socialisation and sounds like it was shut in there alone while the others were in the house, it's hardly fair on the dog

Hi Chris
I think this was very unfair of this breeder to be bitchy to you. In my opinion if a person is willing to run another breeder down because of their chosen line then they are not worth dealing with. I keep in fairly close contact with my breeder who has given my phone no to prospective buyers if she knows I am planning a litter. I had an enquiry from someone the other night who is looking for a puppy later on in the year, knowing my breeder is planning a litter for them I passed my breeders phone no on. I also looked around for breeders in their area and passed these phone no on too. Don't be put off buying another puppy by this person, as long as you get plenty of help and advice from the breeder you choose thats all that matters.
Good luck with the pup
Alli

I would pass the email on to your breeder to9 deal with. If they are both members of the appropriate breed club then the offending person will probably get a censure. Leaving it be will only encourage tehm to do it again if they can get away with it.
As breeders and owners we all have or favourite lines and may not be keen on the style of dog someone else breeds, but this is inexcusable behaviour.
As Kerioak says I would only ever comment on whether they were not doing health tests, and if I knew that they were puppy farmers that have no affiliation to the breed clubs, then I would warn them, but I would be diplomatic and truthful that the pups were from untested stock, and sold through dommercial kennels.
