I've been contacted today by someone who is concerned with the behaviour of his pup.  I've posted it on here so you guys can give me your opinions on what you think is causing this and what can be done to help cure it.  This is how the story goes...

Levi has his tea at 5.00pm and no matter what time after that he messes he is taken out after his dinner and he does his mess outside and he is praised, but when he comes back in he still goes and messes on the floor. He even goes wot work with his owner in the van and he has not once had an accident.

When they first got Levi @ 7 weeks he was not like a normal puppy and was very timid which they put down to the journey home. He had a scar on his right hand side near his rib cage. They got worried when he started passing blood in his stool so took him straight to the vets it turned out to be colitis but the vet and the owners both think he was mistreated but could not prove it.

It took about 3 weeks before he came out of his shell but since then he has been fine.  It took 4 weeks before he would walk with his lead on but was still very scared. He walks well now though. They do not know if any past experience would be making him mess in the house. Touch wood he is very clever and obedient and very gentle with the my 2 children. They feed him 3 meals a day which consists of a dry all in one puppy food recommended from the breeder and the vet. Once a week he gets a couple of kippers and sunday dinner once a week.

What are your thoughts on this...

How old is he now, and the kippers worry me, very sharp bones may have damaged the dogs gut.

He's now 17 weeks old.

I think they may be expecting too much of him. He's still very young. Does he mess at that time every day, or only on certain days? Is it wee or poo - or both?

I would suggest that, as they are aware that this might happen, they never leave him unattended at that time. One of them must be constantly watching him - unless he's asleep of course! Then they will see when he acts like he's going to mess and can take him outside in time.

He messes at this time just as he has come back in from the garden.  He has done his business in the garden with his owners present and as they both come back in he does it the house.

It's always at this time and no other.  Short of going into the garden and back to the house and back out again, I don't know what to suggest.

Would say he has not finished, tell them to let him poo, play with him a bit and the ask him to poo again. 17 weeks is early to worry too much but most dogs can control poo by then if not pee.

Have they tried that? I know one of my dogs has to poo a couple of times before he's finished. Maybe the pup is like that too. As Jackie says, they should try keeping him out in the garden for a bit longer and see if he'll go again.

Hi we have paper trained our lab pup. (she is a lot younger, only 8 weeks). But every morning at 8 she will mess on the floor and again at about 5 at night. Normally a wee but sometimes a poo. I believe that it is because she gets very excited at these times and just forgets where she is meant to be doing it.
Maybe it is the same for your friends dog.

Sorry cant be of any real help.

Debbie
