Topic Dog Boards / General / He thinks its a game!

Hi, I posted in Nov. re-my cocker spaniel puppy and his 'crazy attacks', :) I was pleased to hear this was normal and he may never grow out of them.  Everything is going great, he is now on Burn's twice a day and has one chicken wing for lunch.  His training is coming along great, the only one small problem is that when we go out into the park and I let him off the lead he normally has his 'crazy attack' and I can't get him back on the lead!!  He comes to me when I call him or whistle but when I bend down to praise him, give him a treat, he thinks its a game and starts to run round and round me trying to snatch the treat from my hand (he never normally snatches).  If he isn't having a 'crazy attack' he will sit down nicely and let me put his lead on.  Any suggestions?
Thanks, Jax

Do you always put him on the lead only at the end of the walk? If so, then he's learned that he can play for longer by messing around! What I have found works is to call my dogs to me at irregular intervals during their free play. They get a treat only when I'm holding their collars. Sometimes I just let them go play again, sometimes I put them on the lead for a minute before I let them off to play again. Sometimes, of course, we go home straight away. This keeps them guessing and seems to make them much more responsive and less likely to play up (99% of the time, anyway!).

my bc was the same up till a few weeks ago when i read on this board that not to treat them whilst they are playing unless your holding the collar - he took to it straight away so no i have no probs getting the lead on. i also sometimes randomly (as said above) put his lead walk for a few mins then get him to sit and take it off again for another run. this all made my life much easier at getting him on the lead. everytime he jumps in the car he gets a treat too, stopped him not wanting to get back in the car at the end of playtime.
