having had gs in the showing circuit many years ago, i have just got a puppy to which will be trained for showing.
i recall gatting a long lead for showing, and walking round the ring the dogs lead out infront of you on the lead?
am i right or have i totally forgotton years of practise, training..

GSD's are, as you seem aware, shown in a totally different way to most other dogs. Double handling still goes on (don't know how long since you showed before) but it is frowned on more and more. They do still show on a long lead and the judging is also different, the best way, if you can, would be to try and find a GSD Club that you can attend so you learn what is the current way of showing. When I had the breed I did obedience with them (most being rescue) and not showing so I have no real knowledge of how they are now shown, only what I have noticed at shows.

thanks for your kind reply, i have just visited a web site for german shepherd showing in the uk and have seen how the showing is done still;
yes a long lead and the dog strides out infront of you when walking round the ring.
thanks

Must say when I attended a GSD club we used to watch the Showing people trying out ways of getting the dogs attention from outside the ring (must say we superior obedience people ;) used to laugh). Now I show I understand, but it is not so rampant as it once was, showing GSD,s always looks so energetic, rather you than me.

Think it's more
running round the ring with Shepherds. I hope you're very fit as GSDs seem to be gaited .... and gaited .... and gaited!!!
As jackie says - rather you than me :D

LOL, and when you stop running you have to bend down and sort the legs out, just when you are trying to cough your lungs up.
Jackie, just to let u know I read your post to my hubby about showing Whites and he is taking on the challenge :D He is rather more thick skinned than myself. He is starting ringcraft tomorrow, along with a friend who has a white that I bred, should be worth a giggle. We shall see what response they get there first, should be good to build up a few layers of skin.
As for me I am going in a seperate car with my Lab pup ;)

Good for you, if people within your breed want the colour to be recognised probable the only way will be to get a quality dog into the ring who happens to have a white coat and dare an honest judge to give it high reward.

hi jvoric1
although i am a new member i have experience of showing gsd.
yes you are correct in that a long lead and a great deal of patience when training is needed as the dogs do extend out from you walking round the ring.
i also managed to catch the post about nasty members forum?
in some ways i agree as i spotted 1 persons answer to you and think that that person was may be a trouble maker and i would not get to upset or angry especially if you post something back as you may find you get banned?
just a friendly tip as your posting or last message to jackie h i think was rather abrupt and the swearing un called for but then your feelings were hurt? i dont know its just an observation. maybe you felt insulted by the reply i would have been.
anyway goodluck./

You really shouldn't talk to yourself ..it is the first sign of madness Shepherda
