Hi everyone - my boyfriend and I and our 2 year old choc lab will be moving soon, and I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to make the transition smoothly for our dog?

It will be you who matters most to the dog so make sure in all the chaos you spend some time on him also do not wash his bedding before you go and try at least at first to arrange the room he sleeps in as near as possible to the one he is used to. This does not apply if he sleeps with you.

Hi.
It depends on how far you are moving to. We moved 130 miles just before Xmas with our 2 dogs Goldie x Border Collie, 8 yrs and 9 month old Goldie plus c**, Tiggy. We had to move overnight so we took the animals into kennels a few days before, local to where we were moving to. It was a traumatic day for them as they had never been to the kennels before. Also Misty 9 mths had never left me. Once the removal van had gone I fetched them all from the kennels and they were just so happy to be back with us and settled in just fine.

Thank you for the suggestions. We will be moving quite far, around 200 miles, but I don't think that we'll have to kennel him at any point. I'm hoping that we'll be able to take him to the new place before we actually move in so he can get a good "sniff" of the place, but that might not be possible.

Having moved umpteen times in my life (Forces family) I would suggest that you empty one room of your 'old' house. Shut all the animals in there till the last minute while the furniture van/s are loaded, then, as you leave, put the animals in the car and go. When you reach the new house, again shut them into an empty room (or leave them safely in the car) while you move the furniture in. If you have cats, don't let them out of the new house for at least 2 weeks. Walk dogs, on the lead, all round the neighbourhood as much as you can as soon as possible, letting them wee wherever they want (within reason) so that if (God forbid) they do get out they can find their way back.
Good luck.
:)
