ive been meaning to make some liver cakes for a while now, ive just made some and feeling very proud with myself they turned out great, made them in my food processor it was so easy and Toby loves them, if you havent made them jet i would recommend them, tried Toby with his training and he would do anything i asked him, and bonus is i know everything that went in them.

another recipe for dog biscuits is 8oz sausage-meat,8oz plain wholemeal flour, 2-3oz knorr beef stock cube& some garlic granules, mix meat, flour, & garlic granules  THen bind with the stock to a stiff dough. Roll on floured board  cut half an inch thick shapes and bake in oven at 180 for 30-50 mins
PS Heidi do not serve with chilli tea (sorry)

Just invented a new titbit cake, butcher had no liver so I used a tin of pink salmon instead and it has worked out fine so will try with tuna and also pilchards so I have a different flavour each week.
- By heidleberg [gb] Date 11.01.04 16:34 UTC
Hi Jackie H,
wonder if it works with minced beef, pork, turkey,
think im going to experiment :D
Heidi
- By Jackie H [gb] Date 11.01.04 16:51 UTC
May be have to add more oil and milk to it than you would with liver or fish but sure it would work, bet it would be good with cheese too.
- By heidleberg [gb] Date 11.01.04 17:24 UTC
thats a good idea Jackie H Toby loves cheese

Just a question, why lambs liver? I use chicken livers as i found it didn't smell so horribl when it was cooking (my family can't stand the smell) and then dogs still seem to like it. Is lambs liver better then?
I also experiment - luckily my dogs will eat anything, i'm not much of a cook!!
I have tried adding a bit of bacon to the mixture, (liver and bacon, ;-) )
I also add carrots to the mixture as it adds some vitamins, bulks out the mixture a bit and both mine like carrot.
- By jeanniedean [gb] Date 11.01.04 19:04 UTC
Don't think it matters what liver you use. I wonder if lambs liver is used because it smells stronger & the dog will smell it easier when using at training or shows. Jmo
Ps I hate the smell of it cooking as well.

Thanks guys

I'll try it tomorrow and let you knaow how I get on.  I'll probably be lucky to get as far as putting it in the oven if my pair have anything to do with it!
- By fortis [gb] Date 13.01.04 09:32 UTC
I made some liver cake using chicken livers last night. I cut it up ready for the freezer - whoops! no freezer....:( :( :( it died last week & the new one doesn't come till tomorrow. How daft can you get?
Cathy.

Made my first cakes today.  Was quite stodgy and not only did I have to get my dogs to sit and wait before I could get it into the oven but my young son (3 years old) decided he wanted to try some to until he smelt it!

Just put them to one side to cool and am going to let my bitch off her lead for the first time since I have had her, (6 weeks) to see if she will come back to me and am going to take some pieces of cake with me.  Wish me luck as I think I am going to need it.

Thanks again for the recepie and am looking forward to making some more.

i made liver cakes and biscuits yeesterday, the liver cakes came out spot on and the dogs go nuts for them.the biscuit mix i must have made to wet as it took a lot longer than 40 mins for them to harden up but eventually they did and again the dogs love them plus you know they are not full of rubbish.
- By heidleberg [gb] Date 13.01.04 16:23 UTC
changed my mind couldnt wait , defrosted some sausage meat and made some biscuits and bones out of the mixture, just put them in the oven fingers crossed,

- By jeanniedean [gb] Date 13.01.04 21:17 UTC
2-3 ounces Knorr beef stock cube glad all the doggies are enjoying them

I made liver cake yesterday for the first time, took some out with me this morning on our walk and I've never had such a good recall almost 100%.  Obviously a piece of liver cake is much nicer than running off and ignoring me.  IT'S GREAT.  :)

- By JackieS [gb] Date 15.01.04 12:09 UTC
I completely agree with that. I also made liver cake for the first time yesterday and my two kept returning to me even when I didn't call just in case( they only got it when I called them though ). When I did call them they were so quick, I wish I had made it before. Jackie

Hi Heidleberg and all, do you mind sharing your recipe with us (more details for me please, sorry I have never made anything, nor baked, for a dog :)). I am planning on taking my puppy at 4 mos to her first training classes and was wondering if I could use your recipe to make treats to praise her, if she does good. Are Knorr cubes free of salt and other spices or additives? If I cannot find it here in USA what can I use to substitute them? And what is "swiss roll type tin place", what does it look like? Is garlic an essential ingridient or it adds some flavor dgos like? And about flour. You mentioned S/R flour, is it self- rising flour? Can I substitue it with something else too, like regular flour? Thanks, Alina D.
- By heidleberg [gb] Date 14.01.04 16:05 UTC
Hi Alina D,
8oz sausage meat
8oz plain wholemeal flour
2-3oz stock or water
some garlic puree
mix sausage meat, flour and garlic and bind with stock or water to make a very stiff dough, roll out, make into shapes,
put on ungreased sheet and bake 30/50 mins

- By alina_d [us] Date 14.01.04 16:08 UTC
Thanks!!! I will try this.
- By alina_d [us] Date 14.01.04 16:29 UTC
Forgot to ask again. Sausage meat is just ground beef, pork or chicken? Because I have seen some suasage looking meat in the stores, but it was already wrapped in the shape of the sausage and I am sure they added some salt and sugars to flavor. So, do I still have to get "ready to cook sausage" or I can use plain ground beef, pork, or chicken, or all together?
- By cooper [gb] Date 15.01.04 08:18 UTC
i made them with finely ground pork and that worked fine.
- By tohme Date 15.01.04 10:44 UTC
Stock cubes contain a great deal of salt.
- By co28uk [gb] Date 17.01.04 15:49 UTC
You could also try Tuna cake,  i made this for my GSD that can not have meat or eggs.

3 small tins of tuna in spring wate
8oz plain flour
enough water to mix
3 cloves of garlic

mix and bake in the same way you would liver cake.

yum yum
