Hi

I have just been to a friends house and got on the subject of kennel papers.  While looking through her dogs papers we noticed on The great grandparents side for both dog and bitch the Sire was the same.  Would this be the norm or would it be classified as irrisponsible breeding?

Also two dogs have the numbers T02 and R04 on them... any idea of what this is for or what it could mean?

theres nothing wrong with it..infact I'm sure I read that the top brood bitch, and top 2 stud dogs for 2003 came from 1/2 sister /brother matings

in my town in Kenya there are only 3 pedigree male ridgebacks and 1 female.i have recently bought one female which does not have any relation to the others and at the moment demand is so high for them here that i am worried there will be too much inbreeding.is that number good for a gene pool?

Eddie if you married yoiur first cousin you would both have 2 Grandparents in common.  So your childrens pedigree would show  the same Great Grandfather in the third generation (as in this dogs pedigree) and also the same for one of the Great Grandmother appearing twice.

Now such a breeding would be perfectly acceptable in human society, where the main restriction isn't sue to health but morals, which so not apply to animals.

So my answer would be no this is not an iresponsible or overly close mating, sounds like second cousins had been mated.

Hi,
The numbers T02 and R04 indicate the issue of the Breed Record Supplement in which the registrations of those dogs were published. I think T02 is the Summer, 1993 issue, and R04 is the Winter 1991.

There is nothing wrong with it.  Infact it is common to do close matings now and again.

We are planning a half brother/sister mating for next year, some people might not agree but the line we are doubling up on is superb!

You may also see alot of granddaughter to grandfather matings as these can be EXTREMLY successful.

Ice Queen - that's the important thing - that what you are doubling up to is good - not just any old rubbish!!! :D
