Topic Dog Boards / General / Insurance...HELP!!!
- By DebbieN [gb] Date 09.01.04 00:24 UTC
Hi all

I have spent hours going through pet insurance web pages and still i don't know which one to go for.
I dont want anything that is massivily expensive but i do want the best cover for my lab.

What insurance companys do you use and what benefits do you get.

Thanks

Debbie

Well Debbie in all honesty, you get what you pay for.  There are a lot of cheap insurances, say £9-£11 per month, but what do you get.  You should look for a cover that will pay out on a condition for life, not just upto a limited amount, it soon runs out!  You will then find yourself forking out for meds for the rest of your dogs life and you can't claim a penny.  I use Petplan, for one dog I think its £14.25 per month.

I agree entirely with what Dawn says...you *do* get what you pay for. You need to make a list of things that YOU want out of an insurance company and then find one that covers ALL of those things ;)

I have Petplan and ours is £21 per month (There are various Petplan covers)

You pays your money , you takes your choice ;)

I really would recommend petplan. I pay £14.95 a month for my Westie. They are brilliant if my dog needs treatment over the £60 excess my vets claims direct from them meaning I only have to outlay up to £60. Also my dog was diagnosed with Colitis a month after I had taken out insurance and is now on permanent medication which they pay for and will continue to pay for life. You really do get what you pay for, so it is worth spending a little more.

Both my cat and dog have life plans with Pinnacle - I got 3 months free via my vets (who have the forms) and it's cheaper if you have 2 animals.  It's about £8 a month for my cat and £15 a month for my dog.  I was formerly with DBI Insurance who I had a major (£1500) claim with and they paid without a quibble (previous life and pet!).  I would check them out but my vet told me to make sure you get a lifetime policy or else companies will only pay out for 12 months.  Which would be no good if your dog developed cancer or a heart condition or bad legs etc etc.  It seems a lot but its worth it when you need it.
