hello everyone.
i have got a 14week old west higland terrier called jack. hes lovley and bit of a terror at times but i still love him.
the thing is: iv taught him to go on the toilet on paper whe hes in the house, which he does very well, only a few mistakes when he gets very excited and having his mad 5minutes.
but now that hes old enough to go outside, i was wondering how all of you got you pups out of going on paper and to go outside. iv tried moving the paper to nearer the door but he goes back to were the paper was originally. if theres any other tips you have got i would be grateful to hear them.
il be so glad when he knows how to this, i hate cleaning up wee and pooh.... :-)

You have now found the reason most people advise not to paper train but to take pup into the garden right from the word go. You will have to start all over again as if you had just brought him home. Take him out every half hour while he is awake, and whenever you see him heading for his old toilet area. Also clean the area very carefully with a bilogical washing powder dolution and rub over with alcohol so there is not the dlightest trace of scent to attract him there.
Do you not have a garden of your own, that you kept him in until now? You may also find he will be frightened to go outside if he hasn't been there yet, so you will have to go iut with him and act really casula and pbe prepared for it to take 15 minutes before he feels able to perform in this to him strange area.

Not that i've had to try it but i have read somewhere about feeding your dog in the place it prefers to go to the toilet. Based on the theory a dog does not like to defecate where it eats it is supposed to deter them from going in that spot. Then maybe you could move the paper and he will prefer to go there?

hello thankyou to people to wrote back.
we do have our own garden but we didnt take him out there as we have rabbits and guineapigs and a pond so when he was very little and not innoculated, we didnt think it was suitable.
he used to wee/poo on papar by the living room doorway to kitchen but now i moved the paer literally 4ft away to by the backdoor in the hope that he goes there or askes to go outside.
he does go on walks now and i live in a very built up busy noisy area and hes fine, already 2 wee's out there during walks.
i will put him outside every half hour and when he goes into wee/poo stance, but i think that he thinks outside=funwalks etc?
any more advice from anyone?? i would be grateful

It's just back to basics, and retrain him I'm afraid. With luck, because he's older, it won't take as long to train him to use the garden as it did to use the paper. It does make it harder when they've learned that messing indoors (albeit on paper) is acceptable. I would take the paper up entirely during the day so that he isn't tempted to use it.

Hi,
our 7 month old Yorkshire terrier"Ticcy" was trained to go on newspaper before we had her and we are finding it a hard habit to break. In the daytime she's great-mind you we walk often.
At night,we walk before bed, she"performs" wey hey.We think we're winning but we're still finding wet patches on the carpet in the morning.
Can anyone offer any advise?

My parents have never paper trained dogs in the house, they have always gone outside.
Perhaps with the going outside = fun walks you could try getting them to go in the garden, before going out on the walk. You'll have to clean it up either way whereever they go so that isn't an issue. That way they learn that they go in the garden, then can play.
I've read to teach them to go to the toilet and then bring them straight in, so they associate going outside with going to the toilet.
I never do any playing with the dog before she has gone to the toilet, then we play with the balls etc. she was also taught to go to the toilet on command.
