I need your opinions please!!
My 12 week old pomeranian (weighs only 18 ounces) almost died three days ago.
Let me say first that my friend is the pom breeder and does NOT breed for the tiny poms. Her poms are all 6-10 pounds or so....but she, by chance, got a teeny tiny pom. This pom "Bitsy" was vet checked 3 times...heart and lungs fine...just very very tiny. She kept her for 11 weeks and then GAVE her to me because I had just lost my older pom whom I loved dearly.
The problem is that she will not eat. She was still nursing at 11 weeks still and "chewing" some Eukanuba Puppy Bits. After 4 days being at my house....she had lost 2 ounces and had a hypoglycemia attack from refusing to eat...............I thought she had died, she could barely lift her head................we revived her with nutracal and took her to the vet.
So now I am giving Nutracal each day.....and she will LICK chicken from my hand but it keeps falling out of her mouth......should I be giving her a milk formula??
I have tried many many food approaches and she takes a few bits only and now has refused all commercial puppy food altogether. On top of this, at my friend (the breeders) house......a lady came over and brought her dog and gave all the dogs there COCCIDIA...............so yes, my Bitsy has that too.......and the blood/muccousy stools with it. I am giving her Albon................her feet are colder than the rest of her body and her temp is 99.9.
I have been waking in the night to feed her too
I JUST WANT HER TO LIVE......................
Donna
also she still hasn't had her puppy shots because she is still too too tiny..........................

Oh, and I forgot to say
that I keep dry AND canned Eukanuba with her at all times but she won't touch it anymore...I tried mixing chicken in it and hand feeding her...but she won't eat it now either! She will only lick the plain chicken and maybe 4 bites get in and then she's done.......last night she went 12 hours with nothing but Nutracal every 4 hours............

:( Sorry to hear she's not thriving :(
I've never known a dog refuse the pureed liver so it's worth a go. I wouldn't worry about getting her settled onto a food for now just get some goodness into her and make her strong again - you can always sort out any other issues (fussiness etc) at a later date.
Keep us up to date and good luck.

I have never found i dog yet that wont eat fresh green tripe!
From the information that Donna is giving us her pup's systems sound as if they are starting to shut down (low temp, cold extremities, not eating) so she needs the attentions of a vet.
Wishfairy and Whistleblower - very sick dogs will not and often cannot eat, however tempting you consider the food might be :(

I agree with Christine, once the body systems (of any animal) start to shut down it is impossible to push nutrition in via the conventional route. The feeding mechanism is one of the first to go when this happens. Vet attention is needed immediately

Where do you get your tripe from Whistleblower?
I'm having real trouble tracking it down over here (Northern Ireland) apart from the frozen stuff that cost 59p for 1/2 lb

You could try giving her puppy milk like Welpi or even goats milk just to keep her system working properly and of course keeping her fluids up. If she starts taking that then you can make a puree of meat and milk so it is very runny and start her on that.
However, as Christine has said she clearly isn't getting enough so may need to be put on a adrip by the vet. Best speak to yours asap.
Jesse
Hi Jesse
Whelpi *can* cause problems with puppies as it separates, the fluid going though the body and the "powder" going quite solid and can block the digestive system. Although it is marketed as a bitch milk replacement it is better for larger pups (that don't necessarily need milk anyway) rather than neonates and sick pups

Sorry to hear your puppy is not well, you need to stop feeding it Eukanuba a lot of dogs cant take it (,((( for a quick fix get some liver lambs and live plain yogurt))) put both into blender and that comes out as sloppy mush it has all the goodness to help your dog for a day or two,you can then try it on minced beef raw give by hand for now, all feeds to be soft
Hi Donna
I am sorry to say but it sounds as if your pup has more problems than just being small if she is so much smaller than others of her age. I would take her to your vet and see if she needs to go on a drip, this "feeds" them if they are not capable of doing it for themselves and also take the opportunity of giving Bitsy another examination as there could be developmental or digestive problems.
Alternatively if she was still feeding from her mum, and her mum was happy to feed her then return her to her breeder for a while till she is properly weaned onto solids
Hi Donna,
I would try the mushy foods as suggested, but maybe it's just as well to be aware that there might be something wrong with this puppy. The vet can't always tell what is going on internally, even if the heart and lungs sound fine, but of course as you don't know, that's the problem, so I would persevere with her - at least you'll know she's had every chance, and I really hope for you that she does pick up!

How's Bitsy doing?

Morning,
Im sorry to say but if the pup hasnt gained weight at the same rate as the others of the litter there is a reason for this, you could just be delaying the inveitable im sure anyone on here would advise against gwttting the weakest of a litter as such i know this will hurt but im sure deap down that you know the outcome if its by nature it will be by the vet just delayed as much as possilbe all in the love in the world cant stop mother nature.
sorry
I do agree with that I-Rosswell-I, but on the other hand I have got such a puppy who will be 2 in April. He was the one in the litter who was tiny, and the breeders were surprised he survived - I got him at 9 weeks, and it took weeks for him to put weight on, he wasn't that barrel-shape of his brothers and sisters, but quite ribby and still smaller than them. But now, he is a really handsome boy, his weight is 27 kg, which is more than normal, and he's always full of life. I will say though, he does have allergy problems, but who's to say what that is caused by.
Hilda

What's the supplement in a tube, that is usually very good for Pomeranian's who don't eat properly and with it you can put a little on your finger and if it doesn't try and eat it put it on the tongue. It's something like Enervite? Come on someone help me is this the right name?
Most of my Pom's love chicken, mince etc and don't usually turn their noses up. I've sat their for hours feeding them by hand before now. As you've realised though once a Pom. becomes ill it doesn't take long for you to nearly lose one unfortunately. I hope everything is OK now. I've had really tiny Pom's survive, although again I don't breed for small ones.

Thank you for all of your help!! I just wanted all of you to know that Bitsy is doing well. I am hand feeding her every two hours with fresh cooked meats (liver, chicken, beef) and baby foods and nutacal.and many other things.I just have to keep alternating because what she ate today.she will not eat tommorrow.
I know I am not helping her "pickyness" by offerering her many things .....but last time she didn't like what I offered her..she refused to eat for over 12 jours and had a serious hypoglycemia attack. So now i am just trying all sorts of different foods and she is accepting some of thbut then the next day, she will not eat the same thing again.................for being only a pound she sure is a picky little thing!!
Thank you all so much..I feel as though we are on the up and up and she will keep improving...I pray!

I had a litter of Sibes a lot of years ago, it was my last litter from a 6yr old bitch, one of the pups weighed 6 ozs. The average weight of the other pups was 15ozs. When they were checked at 24hrs old my vet said euthanise the pup. I didn't, the pup is now 7yrs old. I had all sorts of tests done to see if there were other problems, dwarfism, digestion etc. There was nothing wrong she was just tiny. The first few months were difficult but she managed to get to 15lbs at 2 yrs old (less than half average adult weight). I speyed her and homed her with a friend who loved Huskies but only had room for a small dog. One happy owner and one very happy/lucky pup.
Persevere with your little girl I hope she makes it. You may have quite a few sleepless nights over the months to come Good luck.
