Hi do any of you show Labs, I was hoping for some advise with reference to teaching a pup to stand. They are so greedy that I wanted other peoples opinions as to whether using treats was a good idea
Debbie.

A friend who has train a lab has found that food was the only way as its all she wants. They just use small bits each time so she didn't get to fat!

Hi, yes I show mine & I use food as a treat. I start them off young just a few mins a day & they know I always have something in pocket for them, teach them to wait, then to look at you without being distracted & soon he`ll be standing still, tail wagging with eyes only for you! :) Had one pup who was a bit nervous when first in the ring so I used to kneel down to his level & that ressured him.

<<<<<<<<<eyes only for you!>>>>>>>>>>
Is that not eyes only for the food!!!!!!!:D
Thats how all my dogs work, as long as the handler has food they will do anything!!!!!!!!!
Rox
Thanks everyone. I think I was holding 'bait' too close, it put him into a frenzy. On that advise I will teach him to stand and look at me then give him the treat.

We are in the process of stand training also , it is fun LOL
When our pup gets too close I walk away then turn around again so she is further away, then try and get the stay and stand again.
Love to read any tips though.

Hi Pam, another thing I found helped was having one of the experienced dogs with them, they young ones soon twigged what they had to do to get the treat :)
