Topic Dog Boards / Visitors Questions / Taking a dog abroad - how???

Hello,

I need to take my dog to Spain.  What is the best way?  I thought about ferry then driving but the cost is looking too much, plus the drive at the end of it would be horrendous.  This is only a question about the actual transportation, I can sort out all the papers / jabs etc.

I'd prefer to fly, but don't know what to do about my dog.  I know there are a few companies out there that handle this kind of thing but was wondering if anyone can recommended somewhere or share their good or bad experiences.

Thank you.

If you contact Iberia airways they will let you take your dog as "excess baggage" It will need to be in a suitable air transport crate. They will charge you approx £8.00 per kilo of weight or the dog plus crate. You can only use this option if you are on the same flight as the dog.
If you need to be on a different flight to the dog then you are best contacting a Livestock shipper such as Skymaster who will make the arrangements for you.
If you are on the same flight then you take your dog in the crate to the same place as where you check in. There he is taken and put in the hold of the plane. You collect him at the airport at the other end. You need to advise Iberia that you are taking a pet as they will need to make sure there are no more than 4 pets going on each flight :-)
