Morning everyone,
What is it with joe public? im trying to teach Bruno to sit at the kerb before crossing the road (he is a staffy) so when he is a big lad i dont fancy my fiance being pulled under a buss etc, anyway why is it that everyone that sees him sitting waiting to cross has to kneel down and give him a stoke getting him all excited ?? I must say he is now getting very good at it but im sure if a young mother was showing her kid how to cross the road and i gave him a pat on the head rubbed his rosey cheaks etc id be arrested.
Also has a wonderfull instance of over helpfullnes (thanks very much) took bruno round to a friend who "Knows all about dogs had one for 14 years once" they offered bruno a tub of water even though he had only been in a 2 min car trip from home to there place (because he looked thursty) when he didnt drink it they kindly took him to the kitchen while i was distracted with her kids and gave him half a pint of milk .... lovely what a great night i had after taking him home with a bad belly ... think ill give her 2 year old 7 liters of pure orange juice the next time i see them :-) Thankfully an hour or so later nature did as it does and he was himself again although very smelly gas

so people adore your dog and they think its so sweet they have to pat him. personly id be happy that they are coming up as it teaches the dog that people are nice you will end up with a people happy dog at the end of it.but since you dont like this if i were you i would simply say sorry please dont touch my dog im trying to train.most people will be willing to back away.
And next time your round your freinds mention that he had a very bad tummy and ask them not to give him milk again.
I don't mind at all if people want to give my dog attention - but the only thing that really gets on my nerves is when they start getting the treats out! I tell people my dog has got an allergy now (which he has, though we're not sure it's actually food!). It just taught my older collie such a bad habit, that she runs up to people just expecting food, and one day she leaped up on a woman walking along eating her sandwich - just tried to take it! Can't be doing with that!

I will always say politey if I am in the middle of training when out, to please wait whilst I finish what I am doing and then I get the girls to sit and then invite people to come and have a fuss.
Most people seems quite happy to wait and watch !

I cant stand it when you go to someones house or they come to yours and make the dog jump up or have them going daft when you spend hours trying to train them not to do it

Ohh i hate that, when our girl was going through the i hate men stage i was exceptionally carefull and wary and the amount of thick people round here that i would polite say "NO please don't approach her" (Just incase) and yet they still approached her!!
I was training her my own way meeting a male friend in the park, getting my dad and his mate to call on the way home from work etc.
She also loves kids but not more than 1 (she gets too full :D as they always seem to crowd her making her nervous and even they won't listen.
Best of luck (I ended up driving her to secluded spots for training)

My intention for the dog is for him to be a family dog and he has plenty of visitors that we know friends family etc they all understand what he is / isnt allowed to do an play a hand in training him, My problem is with strangers approaching him yes a friendly dog is nice but a stolen dog is heart break, I find children particulerly hard to keep away from him there for i take him out during school times where possible i once had an instance of a 7 year old that wanted to pat the dog even though i had asked him not in, he got scared of the dog and the dog got nerviouse the boy held his hand just out of the dogs reach teasing him resulting in the dog taking a snap at the childs hand ( I pulled him away before he got close but he should not have been put in this situation the dog felt liek he was in trouble when infact he had reacted as i would expect but would not praise.

You have my sympathies i have even got the "Oh its ok Great danes are known for being soft"?? Ermmm excuse me but who is the owner here??
You don't go telling people how to bring their children up so i don't see why our dogs should be any different!

We had a bloke turn up here t'other day asking us to call 999 because he had seen an accident. He is local to here, runs a lot, and only has one arm. He was out running when he saw the accident so came here - middle of nowhere we are.
I let him in and Willis virtually pinned him against the wall - with Phoebe as back up. "Oh, its OK, Danes are known for being soft" he says - putting out his one good arm to stroke a growling and barking Willis... :D I said "don't give him the only one you've got left for goodness sake!!"...luckily, he saw the faintly amusing side.... :p

Also i dont want my dog to have "human treats" He has dog biscuts if a guest wishes to give him a biscut they are welcome i also carry them with me for praise etc so there is no need for people to treat him this way im hoping that he will not accept food off strangers or as previousely menetiond by another poster cause him to assume all food is his, he only gets food after a "SIT" "PAW" and he doesnt touch food with out giving his paw. he will actualy follow you round trying to give you his paw if you dont ask for it to me this is a very good thing

the best way to avoid these things is to tell people .just being honist with them is the best thing , as a dog lover i can see why they do it they think aww cute dog. but with the enjoment of it sometimes people forget what there not suposed to do , some wouldent even have the first idea of how to train a dog. better to speak your mind ;)
