I have a 10 month male Boxer and I've been doing some research in to the best time to have the "snip".A friend had her Lab done at 6 months but I am concerned that is a bit young.I don't want to change him or "calm him down" as he's lovely the way he is but I don't want him siring any puppies either!Even the vets have varying opinions so I was hoping that any Boxer people reading this would give me their views on the subject.Many thanks in advance,

Do you also own bitches? If not, I'm wondering why you want to have him castrated at all. He won't sire any puppies if you don't let him roam. Not a Boxer owner, but if you must have him castrated, give him time to mature first.

If your Boxer is under control at all times he will not have the opportunity to sire pups.

If you have him castrated my vet recommends waiting until at least eight months, or when leg cocking starts.

Hi Chas, I'm not a Boxer owner either, but this is a fairly general subject and you asked for oppinions. Mine is in agreement with the other two. Unless you also own bitches, I would not feel any need to castrate at all. Then again although I do not agree with unneccessary surgical intervention of any kind, there are said to be certain health benefits to spaying bitches, so I'd rather do that than castrate a dog.
If you were to register with Champdogs (it's free) then you could come back on here and discuss this and help us to understand your circumstances. That way our advice would be more in tune.

Unfortunately the decision to have my boxer castrated is out of my hands he has a undecendended testicle.  But Im going to leave it until he is mature (sorry can't use the word mature when referring to a boxer.  In fact you can't use mature when referring to a male either)

He need only have the undescended one removed Emma. If you want him castrated then that's your choice of course, but there is no medical need to remove the normal testicle.

My mum took Mr B to the vet before xmas as he had kennel cough and he had a look at his naughty bits and said that it hadn't come down properly either and would be advisable to remove the one in his abdoman and the remaining one.  For some reason he said he could not just remove the undecended one.  But Im making an appointment for a discussion as to why they both have to be removed.  In all honesty I would leave him intaked if it wasn't for the undecended one.
 

I would certainly query your vet's reasons. My mother's golden had an undescended testicle removed at a year old, and the normal one left. The dog is now nearly 12 years old and hasn't had a bit of trouble.

Edit :Though if Mr B's other one isn't properly down either that would have a bearing on the decision.
