Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / 6 months and getting worse...
- By lilylaru [gb] Date 07.01.04 20:54 UTC
lily is 6 months old now, when she was little she did the usual thing of nipping my feet when i walked, this has now stopped, but only with my boyfriend. she completely ignores his feet, i only have to be in the room standing still and she nips me ! it's got steadily worse recently and i really don't know what to do, if im walking she bites, if im standing still she bites, if im sitting down she bites, agggghhhhh ! i wouldn't mind so much if it wasn't just with me, and it's getting more painful now - she aims for the tops of my feet where it hurts more :(
please help, i don't know how to make her stop :(

Perhaps you need to use a deterant rather than just make it non rewarding?  Have you tried to find a smell she doesn't like (like aftershave, perfum, clove oil or something like olbas oil or Vick vapour rub) and put that on your skin?

Think your pup has no respect for you, try ignoring her, not just when you are being bitten but all the time, pay her no more attention than you have to. Ignore her for about 3 days and then only pay attention to her when it suits you, start by calling her to you tell her to sit, praise (low tone) when she does and then walk away. The aim it to let her know that you are boss, it is your home and if she is lucky you will tolerate her sharing it with you.

i decided to try and do the ignoring thing, unfortunately she got bored of me ignoring her and started barking at me and then found all sorts of new things to chew (like toilet rolls - very messy) i think i have spawned the puppy of satan. even though she is a little darling with my boyfriend (we do live together, it's not like she only sees him occasionally !)

i've decided that tomorrow my boyfriend is going to do absolutely everything to do with lily, and i'll just do nothing ! maybe he'll even realise how often she actually does go out to pee ! (as far as he's concerned she only needs to pee twice a day !)

As well as ignoring her , you need to make sure that you have no eye contact with her ...eye contact to a dog is *contact* ;)

If you're going to go down the total ignoring route then you must expect her to get a lot worse before she gets better - because what's always worked in the past is no longer working she's going to feel she's got to try the same but harder/more - be warned!!....

Nikki used to be very mouthy, but ever since we got Sasha shes stopped. I think it was pure boredom rather than anything else. Vicks mixed with pepper worked well on the skirting boards, but I wouldn't have used that on myself. Now the 2 dogs can wear themselves out and Nikki's much quieter with the humans.

As she is only a little dog you could try standing in a large cardboard box.  It will make it much easier to ignore her.  If she has lots of toys then I would only leave her one mediocre chew toy and put the rest out of reach.  That way when you walk into the room, instead of you being the new and  novel thing to bite you could throw her a valued toy to focus on.  Scatter feeding some of her daily food ration would be another way of redirecting her exuberance.
