Hi, I was hoping someone could tell me the diference between these three problems. I have a new puppy and he has sounded a bit wheezy since we had him.. but only when hes settling down to sleep. The vet has put him on antibiotics, 'Just in case' ?? but he has started with a hacking cough (very occasionally) and especially after drinking water.  After doing lots of quick research (as a new mum would!!) Ive come accross the possibility of lung worm and heart failure as well as KC.  The vet seemed very unsure... so if anyone has any ideas as to what this maybe please let me know!! oh and last night he was sick, but apart from this he has had no other things being produced. His poo is fine, hes lively and happy.  But after hearing the worst possible things, i am now a bit worried. Hes 11 weeks old and has just had his first injection. Thanks in advance.

It is not possible to diagnose a condition over the internet, we can make suggestions. I would rule out Heart failure the vet would have noticed that. It could be lungworm but unlikely so given a choice I would go for KC. Have you contacted the breeder to see if any of their dogs or your pups kennel mates have got KC. did the cough start about 8 to 10 days after his first visit to the vets, if so I would increase the odds on it being KC.

I agree with Jackie H, it's impossible to diagnose anything on the net.
however Lungworm is very rare.
I'd think it's also unlikely to be a heart condition, your vet would have listened to the pups heart. & should have picked up any potential problem there.
There is a lot of KC around at present - especially for this time of year  :(
I would think it's KC, If it is, he'll be rough for a while but he'll shake it off.
There's not much more you can do other than follow your vets advise & keep him away from other dogs.

My dog had lung worm recently he had a hacking cough and kept coughing up phleghm, a course of panacur sorted him out, he also had an infection in his throat.  The vet sent a poo sample off and it came back with hookworm and lungworm.  Apparently its more common in the South West.

Hi my dog had lungworm as a pup too. It wasn't diagnosed for months the vet kept sending us off with different antibiotics even after we'd suggested that thats what it could be because there was another dog locally with it. We changed vets and it was sorted quickly with Panacur, this vet thought that he'd probably caught it from fox droppings. We live in Scotland.

Coughing has many, many causes - the most common in young dogs being kennel cough.  When he sounds wheezy does he have his chin resting on something, and if you lift his chin up does the noise stop?  Many dogs don't seem to notice the noises they make when the sleep like this, especially when they doze off with their chin on your lap or foot.

Heart failure - coughing is one of the later signs of heart failure - it is when the lungs fill with fluid as the heart is not working properly so is not the most likely cause for a young pup.

Lung worm I have never come across but others have already mentioned this - if he has been regularly wormed with Panacur then I would think it unlikely.

Did you mention the cough and wheeziness before he had his injection?  As you are worried go back to your vet, he is the best person to examine your dog and to reassure you.
