i have a maiden dog that i would like to use as stud, but he has had three bitches, now, and dosnt seem bothered, he got on board one, but didnt hit the mark so to speak, and the other one, he didnt even bother just sniffed, is there hope for my lad???
Are the bitches definiteyl ready? Would I be right to think that he is a Lab? When you say he didn't hit the mark, did you just let them 'get on with it' or are you training him, did you help him find the mark?
My boy is 'trained' to several words when mating..... 'on' 'off' 'turn' 'stand still'

Is he eager but just doesn't know what exactly to do, or could it be that the bitches aren't ready? Initially my dog was very eager, the bitch willing but he didn't quite understand what was required. I took advice from this board and not only contacted an experienced breeder but adopted a more 'hands-on' approach! Once you have assisted him to mount and penetrate, and had someone to help with holding the bitch still (which she may not like), you may be successful.
Are the bitches experienced or is it first time for them too? If it isn't the right day for them then you are fighting a losing battle, come the right day, you won't be able to stop them! Don't think that a mating will just happen, as it might not, at least not without 'guidance' from you. Accept that you might have to get involved and assist. It seems strange the first time but after a while it becomes just the way things are done. The owners of visiting bitches might find this strange too which is why you would benefit from the help of an experienced breeder. Give the breeder of your dog a call or contact the breed club.

Clare, how long did you keep the bitch with you? Was the owner there too?

the bitch was with us for a day and a night, the owner was with us

If he's been scolded in the past for mounting/humping cushions etc, you may find that you've successfully trained him not to do it! ;)

no never, he is a kennel dog, and we praised him for mounting
I do believe that we are going over old ground here. Perhaps you are trying to flog a dead horse. He would have to be an absolute stunner and have a temperament that can not be faultered to warrent using him at stud. It's so easy to find Champion Labs at stud, showing and field trials, even dual Ch's. Most of us know what we wish to produce in our lines and follow our plans, which are set many years behind. But even if he is everything that you want and not others, have you enough bitches to satisfy him once you succeed in making a stud dog of him. Stud work is not all that it is cracked up to be and mating dogs is not as easy as some people think.
As has been said tho' 'hands on' your dog must let you touch him anywhere you wish and hold his bitches and allow other people to help.

All that goes without saying. I naively assumed that the stud dog had been through all the relevant health checks especially Hip Scoring if he is a lab and was either a prize winning show dog or field trial champion at least!

do you know i dont know why i bother coming on here, cos i only get judged, so forget it, how do you expect people to learn, when all you lot do is bite our heads off

Then maybe he's not 'that sort of boy'! ;)

our boy has just mated for the first time,at first he was interested even though she was.everytime he went near i praised them both, when he did start doing what he should he wasnt quite tall enough(the bitch is slightly bigger).so i had to help him.he too was quite shy but i kept praising him and hung around while they were playing.i had to hold him up a little as he wouldnt stand on a platform.eventually we managed a tie,and now im just waiting for the bitches owner to let us know that she is whelp.

Hello!:) I haven't posted on here for a long while, but i have been reading the issues regulary. Im afraid i hae to agree with Tyto here. People come on here and post questions for the relative help and advice, and all you guys seem to do is bite their head off, and critise! I know this is not my place to say (in the slightest) but surely you can understand and help these fellow breeders. All Tyto needs/wants to know if any of you have had this happen, and give helpful comments and suggestions! I dont know.....
Tyto- when i came on here, i was completely attacked (;-) hehe) by people who were disgusted and thought i was 'joking', but i know that these guys only want dogs to be well looked after and bred to he highest standard possible! Which is COMPLETELY understandable.
Happy new year to you all, and please dont start having a go at me! Phoebe x

ok i have decided t give you guys the benift of the doubt, why i do not know, as every question, i ask, i seem to get blammed for been a bad person, for wanting to breed of a dog that is of a good sort, is a good worker, good temperment, it is not like i am breeding a dog with HP or eye problems, or with a bad temperment, or any other heridaty problems, so why are you so judgemental,
and yes i do not, want to be a breeder, but my friend, with a bitch equal to my dog, wanted mine to be the sire, and i wanted a couple of dogs, from the litter to train up as a peg dog and a beating.FT dog
and for the record, even th KC erged me to breed from him
so again i ask you lot to learn something about the person before you rip the to shreds,
because in the long run, you are chasing away more people intrested in breeding, that only want advice, remember we all start somewhere, and the way you treat new people, you are just going to make them go into it blind, because you wont help them
wake and look at yourself i only asked for advice
Clare
Clare I've just read this post for the first time so forgive me for being a bit late with some advice.
Many years ago I had a maiden bitch. I took her to a dog who had 'tried' with several bitches but just didn't quite connect. I stayed with the stud dog owner for days (maybe 4 or 5

) We kept them separate but he knew she was there. We tried a few times each day. Eventually about an hour before I had to leave to go home they eventually tied. 10 pups were born. Even though the bitches may be ready you might just need a bit of patience. Oh and someone who has a stud dog or two would be very handy :)
Good luck for the next time.

I'm can't quite see where anyone has 'ripped you to shreds'. As far as I can see people have offered advice. All you needed to say was that your dog had been hip scored, eye tested and had achieved a FTch status himself. Those of course, are ideal conditions to breed from him and what any sane person would look for when buying a pup.
