I have just heard on the news that new research has revealed passive smoking can not just harm humans but also effect our pets!  Not a smoker but hopefully this might promt some owners to stop smoking.
- By liberty Date 06.01.04 18:01 UTC
:D No chance :D
A lot of things are dangerous for dogs, including chocolate, onions and cars traveling at speed towards them

I wish you well with your mission :)

that may be so....but i presume most dog owners dont make  dogs eat chocolate or onions, or stand them in the road in front of cars....but are still happy to smoke all over them (and their kids). And before anyone calls me a killjoy .............Today I had to watch 3 people being told they had lung cancer , all under 40 years old, all with kids, all incurable. all had smoked for 15-20 years. Its the same for me, year in, year out, watching families ruined by fags :(    So you are going to have to indulge me.
- By liberty Date 06.01.04 18:26 UTC
Pinklilies, I have no intention of getting into a discussion about the rights and wrongs of smoking. I respect your opinions and I hope you will respect mine.

liberty
- By pinklilies Date 06.01.04 21:44 UTC
I respect an individuals right to smoke....provided that it is well away from those who do not wish to.
- By liberty Date 06.01.04 22:18 UTC
Exactly, both smokers and non-smokers should be catered for, espescialy in public places, restaurants, pubs, etc :D

eddie, about the can of worms you didn't want to open. I think you opened them..

& my views on the subject are... each to their own. I respect people who do & I respect those who don't.  :)

edit to say.. this post jumped in the wrong place, it was supposed to be under Eddie "didn't want to open a can of worms".  :)
- By liberty Date 06.01.04 22:29 UTC
Snoopy, I'm sure that myself and Pinklilies know what you meant, we're just exchanging views ;)

I agree....unfortunately because of the way that smoke spreads, having a seperate area for smokers doesnt work....you need smoking  and non smoking restaurants, etc. which as you say, should be more freely available.
I get really sad that I cant go out to pubs or meals with my mates, as i have a serious lung disorder and even a small amount of exposure to smoke causes irreversible damage....much more than to the average set of lungs.
Many smokers feel they are discriminated against because of current anti smoking rules....but I can truly say that the only places i can safely go are work, the cinema, the supermarket, and the gym. otherwise i have to stay home .  still the places where smoking is allowed outweigh the places its not. I feel like a leper as I cant really go to lots of places I would love to. surely a bit of clean air is not too much to ask?
we should campaign for smokeer non smoker "apartheidt"...seperate eveything, then we could all be happy :)

please excuse my anger but at the moment i am busy clearing out my husbands fathers flat.;;
HE IS 70 YEARS OLD AND HAS BEEN MOVBED INTO A NURSING HOME..HE HAS NEVER NEVER SMOKED AND HE HAS CANCER. INOPERABLE, NO CHEMO. JUST PAIN RELIEF AND THE SLOW DOWNHILL OF A LOVELY PERSON NOW DYING A SLOW HORRIBLE UGLY DEATH...

life gives you what it does for whatever reason whether you smoke whether you dont?
why am i so defensive...cause i hate people always blaming smoking
typical if unwell doctors diagnoses usually your age,the weather, overweight, smoking,
whatever is ment to be is ment to be???
besides hurting your animals health if you smoke ok then what about all the animals all over the world tested for the human race, monkeys smoking. injections of all sorts...come on people,
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 08.01.04 11:54 UTC
It's because I also have a similar family history (the majority of my father's family died young due to circulatory problems) that convinced me I wanted to live to see my son grow up. I quit smoking. And guess what? I'm still here! My grandmother never reached 45.
- By jvoric1 [gb] Date 08.01.04 11:54 UTC
oh and just incase ive rattled the non smokers.. may i say that at home i smoke outside as i have two kids an elderly mum with me with bronchitis and my hubby and a pup..
in a cafe or restaurant i dont smoke and when visiting friends that dont smoke i still go outside.

Pets have lungs - it seems surprising that this *new* research is a revelation to anyone at all.  It's a bit naive to expect them to be unaffected.
Just hope that some saddo trying to make a name by stating the obvious hasn't destroyed too many innocent animals in the name of research.

Lara not being a smoker never thought about it before, yes when I heard it on the news I thought it was obvious, however many people who they interviewed haddnt thought about it either.  Just wanted to know other peoples thoughts.
- By Lara Date 06.01.04 18:44 UTC
That's because many smokers don't consider anyone else at all ;)
Lara x
- By liberty Date 06.01.04 19:02 UTC

oh well that says it all then..a reformed smoker!, i stopped for 6 years a few yrs ago and i hated anyone who smoked near me, my new years resolution is to stop again but just haven't got round to it yet :)
- By Paula [gb] Date 10.01.04 12:15 UTC
So it's not only me then?! I gave up for 8 years, then after loads of stress went back to it like a true addict - I was only ever 1 fag away from a 20 a day habit!!  Now I have a love/hate relationship with cigarettes - I enjoy smoking (outside - away from the kids and dogs) but hate the smell and my dependence on the expensive little sticks.  anyone noticed those horrid adverts? Won't make me give up though, nor will anyone nagging - I can and will only do that when I decide to!!

Sorry this sounds like a rant, it's only against myself!!

I don't smoke, I just tend to smoulder, ;) like James Dean but more betterer :D

Robert (gonna give up smouldering)

edited to say, thinking about it, not so much like James Dean, more like Cary Grant, can you imagine Cary Grant coming out of the toilet and saying "I wouldn't go in there for a few minutes if I was you" :D
- By liberty Date 06.01.04 19:38 UTC
You're a very good smoulderer Robert, don't forget, I've seen you in action!! ;)
I also heard you where a bit of a babe-magnet around the village , you devil

liberty :)
- By Lorelei [gb] Date 06.01.04 20:12 UTC
OOOh  Robert, honey smoulder some more! Tell you a secret if you light a match in the toilet AFTER flushing the air will be more fragrant without you spontaneously combusting. :)

well done Gina, remember to take 1 day at a time. just get through today & think how proud you'll be of yourself by bedtime.

& when your lying in bed thinking of ... having a you know what..... divert your thoughts to, what you'll spend all the money on that you've saved on ciggies.  :)

If it's any help, I've heard that it's easier to think of yourself as a smoker who 'chooses' not to smoke! :)

- By Lorelei [gb] Date 06.01.04 20:19 UTC
Congratulations Gina! Getting the patches proves youre serious, so youll be successful. Take it from one who knows, stop counting the time youve stopped for as this encourages you to keep thinking of yourself as a smoker. Just tell yourself I am a non smoker. :)
- By pinarello [gb] Date 06.01.04 21:08 UTC
I would have thought with a dogs relatively short life they've a lot more chance of dying of something else long before passive smoking affects them.

Steve a non smoker
- By pinklilies Date 06.01.04 21:41 UTC
well done gina! keep it up!
- By jackyjat [gb] Date 06.01.04 22:36 UTC
Well done Gina and keep it up.  I watched my Dad attached to oxygen in every room of the house, struggling for breath for the last 3 years of his life.  Don't do that to your family!  Breathe free and clear and enjoy all the extra money you are saving!

Good on ya' girl!
- By heidleberg [gb] Date 07.01.04 08:30 UTC
welldone Gina i gave up 20 years ago, that was one of the best things i have ever done, beware you will feel worse before you feel better but it is worth it i promise you,

why do smokers get on the defensive? ive been there i use to do this, its because they are addicted to that cancer stick and they dont want to know the truth, unfortunately you are harming other people and animals too, dont wish to offend but one of my husbands best mates died of lung cancer last year, not a nice thing to see i can tell you,
Heidi

what amazies me is people who are coming of heroin go into re-hab and get loads of help but smokers don't, all they get is a helpline to ring which is always engaged and patches etc which do nothing...yet nicotiene is a bad addiction and very hard to get over it, when i stopped for 6 years a few yrs back i still had the urge, i really want to stop now but am finding it so hard :( i have to go in hospital soon for a back operation and am so worried about my blood circulation with smoking, I NEED HELP!!!! :)
- By rachaelparker [gb] Date 07.01.04 09:09 UTC
I've never smoked but watched a friend give up using a mouthwash, she was a 20 a dayer until she used it. You use it twice a day and it makes cigarettes taste absolutely awful, even if she got cravings she could only take one puff and it was so awful she would have to put it out.
- By Fablab [gb] Date 07.01.04 09:42 UTC
I'm an ex-smoker in some ways I'm glad I smoked because if I hadn't I'd probably wonder what I was missing out on.

Although I'm delighted that I managed to stop & I would always encourage others not to start or to give up.

You have to really want to give up though or it won't happen.

This topic was discussed on another board I frequent and this post by a very good friend of mine
brought home to me what the bottom line is for smokers. This guy is a non-smoker but knows what he's talking about & I post it here only as an incentive to those trying to stop ....

"I hate smoking. It killed my Mum, a woman who was as strong-willed and resolute an individual as you could hope to meet
but who was irredeemably addicited to the harry rags.

I don't hate smokers who can't give up, they are addicted, and it is a sickness.

I used to work in the Oncology (cancer) unit at the Western General, Edinburgh and I met more reformed ex-smokers there than anywhere else.
Unfortunately, they all kicked the weed after they found out they were dying, so giving up was a bit of a case of locking
the stable door after the tumour had spread...

Check out the number of smokers in your average cardiac ward.
There's also a plethora of statistics supporting the overwhelming conclusion that smoking reduces quality of life,
debilitates, causes disease and then just for the full whack, kills you stone dead.
As I said I've been in contact with more people dying of lung cancer than (hopefully) anyone else on this message board will ever get close too.
The gallows humour and bravado evaporates when they are told they are past help and will die sooner rather than later.
- By ClaireyS Date 07.01.04 10:16 UTC
I gave up last April after 13 years smoking, towards the end I was smoking 40 - 60 a day  I tried hypnosis and the patches in the end it was my will power that got me through.  Im not anti smoking (I wouldnt have any friends if I was  ) but I must admit I hate the smell on my hair and clothes after being in the pub, and I pick up the smell on others too.  Being a non smoker makes me realise how really rank I used to smell, I used to think I was covering it up with perfume etc but now I know it just made it worse :D :D

Good luck to all those who are trying to give up, and for those who dont want to, its your choice and no one can make you ;)

edit to say : back to the original post - I lived at home when I smoked so never smoked inside the house because of the parrots so the dogs etc. never got harmed.  Now im in my own place I wont let people smoke inside, I say its cos my snake is sensitive to it (which he is) but the other reason being I dont want the smell in my house, even as a smoker I hated the smell of stale smoke in a house
- By G30ff [gb] Date 09.01.04 10:14 UTC
Won't work Fablab, all smokers WANT to give up..... lecturing smokers on the dangers of smoking & trying to scare them into quitting has the opposite effect....

What we need to look at is what COMPELS us to keep smoking despite knowing so much about the dangers.....

Geoff :)
- By gina [gb] Date 07.01.04 13:32 UTC
Jacki

Try NiquitinCQ Clear 24 hour patches. You cannot possibly smoke more than I was smoking up til yesterday and they really seem to be working - no cravings AT ALL so far but of course it is early days but I cant believe I am into my second day without cigs. My 'body clock' tells me to look at the clock at 11am as that is first break in work and when I went out lunchtime I automatically reached for the packet that wasnt there :) but as I am not having any cravings I forgot about them again.

Dont know how long it will last but am dieting (Atkins) at the same time so I dont look like Mr Blobby and I am missing my food more - may be that's the way to do it the hunger pains are hiding the cravings. ???:p :p Give them a try you never know.

Gina

jacki, You are right to be concerned about the risk of anaesthetic and smoking, your doctor will be able to put you in touch with professional counsellors to assist people who are trying to give up. virtually all hospitals have this service too. try one of  these. the patches only control the physical addiction, not the mental addiction/habit. It has been proven by research that going to one of these counsellors increases your chances of quitting...so phone now. .
