Topic Dog Boards / General / How can i tell if he is german or not?
- By Graham_T [gb] Date 06.01.04 01:17 UTC
I have just got a GSD on Saturday, but have recently read that there are different types within the breed such as German-type or English-type.....which is mine? how can i tell? he has quite a black face at the moment but is only 8 and a half weeks old

didnt you see his parents, or at least his dam--didnt you  do your homework as to which type-line etc you wanted to buy one in from????  are the parents hip scored ?????     :(

Can only add if you need to ask does it matter.

youd need to know wha the parents look like. its all becoming a bit vague now, but from what I understand the germanic types are lighter boned and have a much more slanted back. The "english" type as i think of it (gsd's are not ny breed) are more like the old style the polics would use, straighter in the back and more solily built.
as I say, Im not into the GSD at all, so I am sure I am going get corrected on this

Hi all just to add he could be middle of the road , who bred the puppy, has his parents been hipscored, and had the necessary health checks, it doesent really matter  whether hes german bred or not, so long as he is healthy, his parents are free from any defects, and the breeder has reared the baby well, my girls are middle of the road, I believe the two need each other at times buts thats my opinion others will disagree I am sure, not all german dogs are roaches, not all are light boned, there are good examples just as there is bad and good  examples of the english type, what I would say to you is rear him well, ie plenty of good food, dont over excercise him until 12 months old bones are not fully calcified until then let him grow at a steady pace, dont force his growth with calcium supplements these sometimes can do more harm than good, and if he is well bred and reared there is every chance that he will develop a nice young adult, hope this helps, if you need any more info on the pedigree of your puppy please feel free to email me

As this is my first german shepherd and he is just a pet, the main issues i was interested in was his health and temperament.  Yes his parents had been hipscored and both had scores of 8, and his other ancestors also had good hip scores.  I have seen both parents but both look like what all the books show a german shepherd looks like....lots of light brown in their coat colours.  Now i know that their outer coat will change the color of his torso but his face will remain the same color.

So i was just wondering if the coat colour was a sign of his ancestrial 'nationality'.......although he was born in Wales....making him a wesh german shepherd lol

regards

Graham

german shepherd

i always thought a german shepherd was just that, can also be called an alsation but all the same thing...it depends on the linage as to what it will turn out like, either rough coated....long rough coated or long haired, done a link for you to look at anyway...hope this helps :)

Surely you have a pedigree? And surely you saw the parent/s and asked the breeder?? I see that you are a research scientist!!!

I know how he feels!!! as far as I can see the guy asked for some advise and got attacked for not checking every little detail out! geez! we were all novices once! When I 1st got into my Staffords even though I had researched I was still a HUGE greenhorn! LMAO! I used to think that the horrid brass harness's and collars where worn by the dogs to protect them in the dog pit!!! Now I now they are just to make the dog look tough! and yes, I did put them on my dogs way back then, to my very great shame!lol!
We all have to learn!
Try giving folk a break, and not jumping to all the wrong conclusions without any facts.
