Hi we have just got a labrador puppy, she is 6 weeks old. She is booked in for a vet check on wednesday. Just have a few things that i am worry about and was wondering if they are normal things or not.

Firstly she has been asleep for about 4hrs, she woke up once had a wee and then went straight back to sleep again.
Secondly every time i pick her up she makes a funny sound...it sounds a bit like a ducks quake only not as loud or long.
Thirdly sometimes her tummy spasims, looks like hick ups.

She had a vet check at 3 weeks and there were no problems. I am sure that these are all normal.

And lastly she hasnt had a drink since leaving the breeder at 1 this afternoon.

Thanks for any advice,

Debbie

Firstly make sure she is drinking! This is most important! If all else fails try dipping a finger in and putting it to her lips. It may start her suckling, if so hold the drink to her lips and she may start. Is she eating and what? there is usually quite a bit of moisture in puppy food so a puppy gets at least some of it's requirement from there.

The sleep is normal, she's very young and will sleep most of the time between eating, playing and messing.

Hiccups seem a normal part of a puppy's life. We always say when we see or hear the hiccups that they are thriving!

The sounds you describe sound almost like the contented little noises puppies make.

Hope this helps.

Best wishes, John

Thanks for that reply because you have also helped me!  I have had my 11 week old lab x for a week now and the first time she was alone with us - she started having these little tummy spasms!  I remeber my parents dog having hic cups but they always came with a noise! :-)  I sort of thought they could be hiccups but wasnt sure

Some puppies can be quite ladylike and not make a noise when they hiccup or even bring up the wind. Others sound like a navvie!! ;)

Thank you John.

She is still asleep.

I am feeding her the dry mix that the breeder had her on it is James well beloved lamb and rice flavour for puppies. I am adding warm water to soften it.
She has eaten a little bit since being home.

She has had a long day. It took us 4 hrs to get her home and she didnt sleep at all in this time and then when she got in my kids wouldnt leave her alone. In the end i had to put her into the kithen and close the door, she just fell right asleep.

Since the kids went to bed i have brought her back into the living room so that i can keep an eye on her.

Again thank you

Its very important that you take charge and make the kids leave her alone sometimes ....its too much for a small pup. Make sure that she has a space of her own, maybe a crate, where the kids are banned from touching her.She could then go into it of her own accord when she is tired. Then she is not reliant on you trying to judge when she has had enough.

hi debbie, congratulations on your puppy :)
i think by tomorrow she will be running around and playing...at the moment she will be tired out with the journey and with all the extra fuss she has been getting, i think it would be a good idea to get a crate for her, they are godsend honest, for the pup and for you...when she needs space from things going on around her she can go into her crate out the way and sleep safely at night too. my pup goes in there himself during the day and is only locked in it when i either pop out and a night time. Its his den and i dont allow my kids to bother him when he's in there wether hes asleep or playing with his toys as i know he needs his space.:)
your puppy will sleep alot as she is very young so don't worry, i'm sure she is fine :)
have a good nights sleep :D

Hi all

We had set up kid/dog rules before she came. The reason the kids were all over yesturday was because she was new. This morning is much calmer. As for the crate, i will wait and see how things go, she has her bed.

She had me up at 2am.  She was really crying and i thought she missed her mum, in fact she was hungry. I fed her and gave her some fresh water, she then had a mad half hour running around and falling over. And finally at 3 she went back to sleep.

She cryed again at 4am but this time i decided to leave her for a while and she settles back down and went to sleep agagin.

Thanks

Debbie
