I've been looking at boarding kennel adverts and noticed a lot want kennel cough vaccinations our dog has had his usual vaccinations is it one of these or an extra one done before boarding and if so how long before kenneling does it need to be done.

Hi Steve.
The kennel cough vaccine is one that goes up the dogs nose.  It lasts for only 6 months and only protects against Bordetella, one type of kennel cough.  Another type is Parainfluenza, which is covered in your annual vaccs.  We do not insist on the KC vaccine, it is NOT that reliable as there are so many types of KC.

Most boosters now have immunisation accainst parainfluenza - (pi on your records), which is just one form of cough. Another strain which is vaccinated against is Bordatella bronchiseptica, this is given via a syringe trickled up the nose.
If kennels want your dog vaccinated against KC - they may mean the seperate one (for BB)

Problem is there are so many strains of cough, there's no guarantee your dog will not catch cough - even if immunised.

I think Intrac say to do at least 2 weeks before kennelling, but Nobivac say with their brand your dog will be covered  in 5 days.

Just a thing on kennels, my dog goes in reasonably frequently and the last couple of times he's been hellish with kennel cough when he's returned.  Nothing wrong with the kennels but the vet said if there's lots of dogs in one place then KC will rear its head.  I'm trying a new kennel next month that requires the KC vaccination (other's didn't) and I'll see how we get on because last time Copper was really not well with coughing etc.  Vet did also say KC vaccine doesn't always work on dogs that are particularly susceptible to KC.  This isn't a criticism on kennels - they're my lifeline!! i would be interested though if anyone runs a kennel to know how they control this.

This seems a relevant thread to ask this.. my 12 year old Jack Russel (female) went a week last Monday to the vet to have her kennel cough innoculation for the first time as she's going into a kennels that requires in next week.  She's never had it before and the vet gave her this orally.  Since about this Monday she has been displaying text book symptons of kennel cough.. the sporadic dry hacking cough, retching etc.  Is it possible that the innoculation caused her kennel cough?  She was in very good health before this happened.

Thanks, Helen

Yes the KC vaccine can produce the symptoms of KC, and I believe its contagious because it is the KC antibodies producing it, doubt the kennels would want her now, I know I wouldn't, and its not your fault at all!

Hi Helen, yes unfortunately it certainly is possible & no doubt likely to have been the vaccine causing the kennel cough. Dawn is right, the reason why no kennels would like to have her board with them is because as she is showing signs of classic KC she no doubt has it( although you would need a vet to confirm this) & it is highly contagious yet the majoritory of boarding kennels persist on making this vaccine mandatory for all in coming boarders. Just the same as most vets insist on including it in dogs annual boosters, without either of them informing clients of the very real outcome & inefficacy of this vaccine.

I work in kennels and have worked there for a couple of years now... we dont insist on the kennel cough vaccination but we do recommend the vaccination... however if you do have your dog vaccinated against kennel cough they have to be vaccinated at least 3 weeks before boarding. this is because the vaccine is live giving the dogs a small dosage of the disease. if you get your dog vaccinated then there should be no problem with kennel cough... it is just a common disease its not just caught in kennels. i recomment the vaccine as the disease isnt pleasnt for the dogs. we have always recommended the vaccine to all customers and we have never had a problem with kennel cough. hope this helps

Yes, sadly in some instances it can produce kennel cough - live vaccine.  Not helpful if you've only given it in order to kennel your dog!  Hope your JRT gets better soon.
